Our Dad's Decision to Try NUPLAZID & How We Are Going to Pay for This Expensive Medicine

As many of you know, my precious, fun, and funny father has had PD for probably close to 20 years, and a recent fall and surgery on the broken bone brought on psychosis. The condition comes and goes but has had very serious impacts on him and his family. The most serious problems involve Mom, who also wants to keep him out of institutional care. Dad is so content at home, but he is not himself at all during these psychotic episodes and cannot be trusted.

Because his balance has become poorer, neither we nor his neurologist trust Clozapine or Quetiapine. These are some of the more common atypical antipsychotics for treating PD hallucinations and delusional thinking, but they have a negative affect on motor skills. Our dad fell a week ago and has 2 layers of several stitches above his eye. It is healing well, thankfully 🙌....and he also has some fun talking about "his boxing ring opponent giving him the black eye", haha. Since he falls now, we figure Nuplazid is worth a try.

After contacting our pharmacy and one other, we realize how expensive the medication is, and so the manufacturing company is working with insurance to supposedly get it for about $10 a month! Praying we can, and also that any side effects are very minimum and his delusions become less and less. It's scary trying new meds and especially newer ones with such varying success.

Will keep you posted.

Much love, thoughts and prayers...

We’re also about to start it and waiting for the pharmacy and insurance to figure things out. Hoping this works for your father and my hubby. Keep us posted.

Have you been able to get the med yet? Our insurance company is making hubby take a cognitive exam first (which I’m sure he’ll fail as he can hardly speak). Hoping we can still figure this out somehow.

Still in progress...Today his Neurologist will be asked to send formal prescription out to both Walmart Specialty Pharmacy as well as to Acadia Pharmaceuticals which makes Nuplazid. 3 companies including pharmacy and insurance are collaborating with us trying for $0 copay. Praying still it happens. With Acadia on Friday on the phone, she sounded like this may work! I will let you know. In the meantime Dad asked his Google Hub computer about his drug side affects and found that Pepsid can have mental bad side effects so he stopped it and has overall been much better since, as far as hallucinations and delusions episodes. I was so proud also of him to take the initiative to research. Way to go, Dad!!! My prayers and thoughts are with you all today...

Well, we made it through the cognitive exam (rather he woke up enough to answer 3 or 4 questions). Anyway now the doctor has to fill out a bunch more paperwork and collaborate with Acadia and go through one of their pharmacies. Still waiting…………

Any luck on your end?

One other thing that may possibly help SOMEONE reading. If you take SINGULAIR for allergies...PLEASE READ THE PAPERS CAREFULLY FOR MENTAL SIDE EFFECTS! A young loved one of ours just got out of a mental health facility for what seems to be a side affect from this medication!

Walmart SPECIALTY Pharmacy has been so kind to work with us, and we are halfway thru the process and still praying. Our compounding pharmacy nor Walgreens would do it. I will let you know how much less than their normal $500+ monthly cost we end up paying and later how our dad is doing on Nuplazid
