Came across this in the Wall Street Journal by somebody who was commenting about an article concerning telling the difference between regular food, lightly processed food, heavily processed food, and the big issue, ultra processed food, and why it all matters. The article itself was about whether ultra processed food is healthy or not and what is the definition of ultra processed. The commenter recommended using this Yuka app to help appraise your food. It's free. Personally I never heard of it but that is no surprise.

While this can provide some useful information for each individual to use in concert with information from other sources, algorithms cannot tell you what is healthy for you.

Who has decided that this food is good and that is not? Who has decided that this inclusion is good or bad?

Each person needs guidance from someone (a person) who takes time to know them and care about their needs.

Right, that makes good sense if it is indeed just a algorithm.

So you have used Yuka and you're telling us about your own actual experience with it. Correct?

So how long did you try it and what was your results?

No, I have used other, similar systems that use similar processes.

You need individual guidance.

Deek,

On your smartphone, go to your Apple Play Store or Google Play Store depending on which phone you have.

Or if you have a computer, in your search engine, type Yuka.com or Yuka App.

On your phone, tap the little picture of a magnifying glass, which will bring up a line for you to type a search term. If you were on your computer, just follow through with whatever your search engine has delivered to you.)

Type in Yuka App and hit either the rightward-pointing arrow on your phone's desktop or the picture of the magnifying glass inside your phones desktop, whichever one starts the search engine... It will bring results of and you then tap the appropriate one, which brings you to the download page and also arrows to tell you more before you download including prior comments from users that you can scroll through without downoading the app..

It's supposed to be a free app that helps you figure out what sorts of foods are healthy or unhealthy, and why and what and all the relevant details.

At least that's what it sounded like from the reader who entered the information into the reader-comment conversation in the wsj, in the article concerned with understanding the effects on peoples' health from "processed foods," "highly processed" foods, and "hyper processed" foods, versus foods as they naturally occur or unprocessed foods that have not been significantly changed from their naturally occurring state.

I'm not recommending it, in fact I am asking our group whether anybody has had experience with this app and based on their experience, what do they think of it. I've gotten it and I'm looking through it myself.

I scanned some “natural “ turkey cold cuts in Walmart and it told me to go to Aldi and get their organic kind, which is what I usually get! Lol!

Very glad your first experience was of use! Confirmation counts.

"Natural" is a common marketing gimmick "wiggle word" intended to mislead the consumer. The e coli that gives you dysentery is similarly "natural."

Unfortunately, after two or three decades' massaging, "organic" has also become similarly adulterated. Maybe the label specifics will give you a little more value from which to discriminate.

Yes it's sad that the FDA is so corrupt that they put profits over people. I could go on and on but it makes my tremors flare up when I think about it!
