Over the last 10 years, about once a week, I've measured my Parkinson's. I've done this using the side to side tap test on both my left and right sides. I've reported the results to this forum before. This post is an update.
I started doing these tests 8 years post diagnosis.
The conditions for doing the test were semi-controlled: on getting up in the morning; at least 12 hours post medication. The app hasn't changed over the 10 years. But, other factors were not controlled for: food; clothing etc..
For the first 8 years or so the trend was slightly upwards (improvement). I put this down to a training effect. Starting approximately 17 years post diagnosis I found the scores started decreasing (worsening).
There are obvious questions about statistical significance. So, any comment is speculative. But in the absence of firm data and the imperative of keeping active, one must make the best of the data you have.
I say there is a slight improvement beause for the first 8 years the regression line is climbing. However, the increse is so slow that I wouldn't disagree with "stable". This is especially the case because of the likely training effect.
Subjectively, I feel that the measure gives a fair statement as regards my motor symptoms. But, overall my condition has declined, with new symptoms being added, e.g. drooling.
