Is it just me, tremors worse after strenuous work

I have not been able to get a good answer from any Dr. about this. If I run a weed eater, push mow, drive one of our big tractors or lift weights etc. my tremors get quite a bit worse. I got really cold the other day and had a similar experience. Anyone else do this?

Hormesis might be at work here.

What do you mean? After reading about it I understand it even less.

I am sorry. I meant that although your tremors increase, working hard might at least have the upside of having a positive stress response in a longer term sense. Extreme exertion (HIIT for example) and sauna are both hormetic stressors. It was my hope that I was finding an upside to the unpleasantness of increased tremors after taxing behavior.

After I exert myself and my tremors increase (mine are internal) I have found that replenishing electrolytes is helpful.

I hope you are able to keep up your hard work.

Hi Little_apple, How often do you take electrolytes and how do you know when you need it? What kind of sauna do you use( infrared or traditional)? Thanks

I presently am using an infrared sauna but intend on resuming traditional soon. I am intending on resuming traditional based off of research articulated in this:

youtube.com/watch?v=fUBgKK-...

I don’t know how to access when I should take electrolytes. I take after vigorously sweating.

If you have advice on assessing one’s electrolytes i would really appreciate it!

Thank you. I have been using infrared sauna blanket for the past months. Before that I was barely able to sweat even after high intensity workouts but now even with a fast walk I sweat enough. I prefer infrared sauna than traditional.

Youtube link not working.

For electrolytes imbalances and When to Pick Electrolyte Drinks Over Water this link has good information.

“The term Hormesis has been adopted to explain how a mild oxidative stress associated with exercise can result in favorable adaptations that protect the body against more severe stresses and disorders derived from physical stress or other etiological origin (Ji et al.Jan”

Happens to me as well.

I only get a bit of action tremor as my problems are mainly stiffness and slowness, but I notice a foot tremor when going for it on my exercise bike and if I'm cold my left arm shakes and twitches.

I am curious if you have ever tried melatonin during these episodes to see if it helped to calm them down? If not it might be worth a try. I use a 12 mg melatonin tablet that I dissolve under my tongue as it seems to act quicker and absorb better. I don't have PD so I can't say if it will help or not, but it might be worth a try given the known and proven methods of action of melatonin.

Various tremor types (rest, postural, kinetic and intention) may be seen in both essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, with time, the two diseases may coexist within a single patient. See the post from a week ago.

Yes - I have seen that too. If I get chilled - tremors swell and link up with shivering. Duck for a warm blanket

I strength train every other day, and experience the same issue. Although they increase after exercise, they calm down to almost nothing a few hours later. Keep exercising!!

yes! That’s one reason why I don’t lift heavy weights anymore, when I exercise! Rigidity is what I blame for that, in my case, anyway!

Same here... Any type of exercise triggers the tremors in my right arm and sometimes my right leg. Cold weather is much worse. Although sometimes if i gather enough concentration, I can minimize them, but it requires more concentration than I'm able to sustain. I guess I have a short attention span. Lol

the harder you exercise the smooth muscles in your body the more dopamine is used which depletes resulting in increased tremor. hang tough.

I have a good resistance exercise machine and every time I use it for a half hour, my tremors increase. It take me several hours to settle down. I read that exercise is supposed to be the best thing for you, but it is hard to tell that it is better for you in the long run. I am also on B1 (1 gram) but have not have no idea when enough is enough. Some go up to 4 grams but it gets too expensive.

The trainer in my PD class explained it this way:

When you exercise, all the things that are made BETTER long term (blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar, muscle strength etc.) are temporarily made WORSE. Think about it: walking out of the gym, you have high bp, racing pulse, sore weak muscles and if you measure your sugar, it's up.

But obviously, all those markers ultimately end up lower/better than they would've been, right?

The same is true with PD symptoms--everything goes up right after exercise, but down long term. And, by the way, everyone shakes and stiffens up a bit after a hard workout, not just pwps. It does have to do with temporarily using up available dopamine, like Beehive said. It's not a bad thing. DO NOT let it stop you.

great advise already given here regarding exercise BUT

I am 75,diagnosed PD 20 years ago

just one man's observation

most of the guys I knew that went to the gym at lunch, ran and lifted weights, good athletes, strong and healthy , played sports , are dead, and guess who is still alive the guys who took a nap instead. I was an athlete and just about ruined my body.

We destroyed our bodys by over stressing them and many strong men blew up their heart at 55 just jogging 10 miles. The recovery room at your local hospital on any day is full of men. their wives pick them up in the SUV and wait for their husband to pull themselves in and the next wife drives up behind in line ,and it goes this way all day. Go to the entrance /exit and watch for yourself.

Do every thing in moderation, stop lifting bails of hay. If you insist on identifying with this macho person you have created then buy as much life insurance on yourself for your family's benefit that you can get.

Good luck

and as for the trainers advise, they were the first to go ,stress was not part of their education and is still not.

I think I would rather go out doing what I’ve always done rather than sit down and let PD rule my life. I have a good life and I like to be active and will be until I can’t be. To each their own. By the way your heart does not blow up because of running 10 miles, it blows up because of bad choices in our diet.

Bigtex, All my friends were outdoors hunting fishing athletes and all ate a good diet and we all believed the same as you.

the killer is not food, or lack of proper exercise, it is stress.

It might be worthwhile to increase slightly your L-dopa before starting. I found that with a static dose regime, when exercising, I got tired and short of breath. If I increased the Sinemet slightly about an hour before starting exercise, I had a much greater tolerance for physical effort. However, when I stopped and rested, I seemed to have greater dyskinesia. I have timed intake of meds and duration of exercise to get best results. Should check with your doc before trying.

I've thought about it. If exercising, it uses or needs dopamine. It releases some. But if it's strenous exercise it will need more than one releases under PD. It's useful to signal to the brain to build more dopamine neurons. But in the short term, the body will need more than it can produce. So there's more symptoms such as tremors.

This is completely made up by me. So I don't know what science says.

Sounds good to me!! I have been remembering things as they happen also. If I lean over and put weight on my arms my tremors will start or get worse, not terrible but very noticeable. If I get my lower body in a bind I get tremors in legs then they ease up when I remove the pressure.
