I've had PD for over 14 years. 7 years ago, I was going downhill fast and it scared me a LOT. I read everything I could and finally came across a small study that showed improvement when limiting protein and eating plant-based. Within a few days, I went from not being able to gather enough energy to get out of bed to getting up and walking with a strong friend who promised to catch me if I fell. Well, I didn't fall, so I kept it up and I kept pushing how far I could walk. Now, I regularly fast-walk at least a mile a day and do other exercises as well. I've lost some of the fat and put on a little muscle. This is after all a low-protein diet, not a no-protein one. There are only a few cautions that I've found over the years:

Take a B12 supplement. Your body needs it and can't produce it and it doesn't come from plants. It comes, believe it or not, from bacteria. In ages past, before we washed everything to death, it was everywhere. We only need a tiny amount, but too much won't hurt you. Very cheap and easy to find.

Omega-3 is very important as much of our brain is made of it. Most Westerners don't get anywhere near enough in their diets. People commonly take "fish pills", but fish can be contaminated with heavy metals and other things. Now there's a better source; algae-derived Omega-3, which can contain all of the types you need (DHA, EPA). You can also get O-3 from ground flax and chia seeds, although our bodies then have to convert it to DHA & EPA, which they have difficulty doing as we get older.

Iodine is one of those things you only need a little of. It seems that most meat contains little. It can be gotten from kelp so I just put a little bit of kelp powder in whatever I'm eating, like my veggie chili.

I'm currently reading "Fiber Fueled", a wonderful book, and it has reminded me that eating a diverse range of multi-colored veggies is very important too!

As a final note, I've also added: "whole food" and "low-salt, low-oil" to my diet. I've noticed some improvements from those changes as well, especially the low-oil (talking here about added Omega-6 oils like corn, cottonseed, etc.) An Omega3 to Omeage6 ratio close to 1-4 is ideal, but most people have a crazy-high ratio of 1 to 20 or worse! This will cause inflammation; something none of us need.
