New Hope for Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease: Designer Neurons

"The new research describes the implantation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to replace dopamine-producing neurons destroyed by Parkinson’s disease. Such cells not only survive the grafting procedure and manufacture dopamine, but send out their branching fibers through the neural tissue to make distant connections in the brain, just like their naturally-occurring counterparts. Now thats odd" to replace dopamine-producing neurons destroyed by Parkinson’s disease. "

I thought Parkinsons was the result of those Dopamine producing neurons being destroyed , not the thing that killed them.

I was very excited about this research too, particularly the more recent ones seem to get good reviews medically, with the articles emphasizing that there have been no unmanageable or problematic side effects.

My doctor said that the worry and reason there's not a lot of articles and excitement about it is that they got burned in around 2014 when they put in neurons and they didn't know when to stop growing and turned into tumors.

However I haven't found this doctor to be totally accurate. And I am looking for another one. So I was thinking that I'd like to research this a little more and see if the current versions are working with less troubles.

There seem to be a Japanese team and a New York team. But I found it confusing trying to read up on who's doing what.

One of the more interesting parts is that they're able now to use cells from your own body that they turn into stem cells that then they turn into neurons, so you don't have to take anti-rejection medication. And of course that's a big deal.

What have you figured out. What have your thoughts been. What is your doctor say?

When I get a chance I'll post an article about a glove being developed at Stanford that's sounding very promising.

I read, or rather skimmed a few articles. I only read the recent ones. And there was no mention of tumors, and instead an emphasis on lack of problematic consequences. They've had success with six apes and a human, in one of the studies. By now if this was running into problems that would be showing up in the articles...

So I'm excited to see this and looking forward to reading some more about it when I get a chance to research.

I asked a doctor at inova during an informational presentation about the glove. He had read up on it, and added that he didn't know anybody with it so he couldn't really judge. But he definitely didn't diss it as not good or ineffective or poor idea conceptually, so that gave me some hope ☺️

Well then I won't post the article. It sounds very good. And it's in human trials that if effective, they will ask for FDA approval next year. So it's not a distant dream.

I applied for the Orchestra study. That drug was especially engineered to up ravel that chemical that's lining up in brain neuron cells and killing them. That's a step in the right direction too.
