Latest symptom, stinging eyes

Last night hubby had stinging eyes. He feels like there are chemicals in them. I wondered if it was dried sweat wiped into them but he feels like it is chemicals in his tears that are burning. Has anyone else had that?

Could it be allergies? Hubby squints his eyes, and we need to see an ophthalmologist.

I’m not sure. Its mid autumn here so grass pollens have pretty much washed away but maybe he isn’t washing his face as well as before and it might be running into his eyes. He says he feels like the the tears are acid and it’s not off his face but I wonder.

I get blurred vision and dry eyes when I use Niacin, as low as around/below 100mg per day. If you've recently increased his B3, that may possibly be the problem. Corneal Abrasions due to dry eyes can definitely sting/burn like hell. Try moisturizing eye drops to see if it helps as well or suspect other causes for his dry eyes, such as sleeping with his eyes open.

Rescuema,

Vision problems are also PD related, right?

rescuema profile image
rescuema in reply toDespe

Of course. You should nevertheless investigate any sudden change that could be related to supplementation and still address it as to accepting it as a PD symptom. Both B3 deficiency (PD) and overdose (causing other deficiencies) may contribute to vision issues. Corneal abrasion can burn like acid in your eyes, and must be addressed regardless of the cause.

Wow! Hubby takes 300mg NA. Got to go back to NR and see if vision improves.

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply toDespe

Was that for me or rescue me? Is 300 a lot or little? He took niagen for a couple of years but it is expensive and I can’t say it made any difference. There is a little NR in the Hardys with added vitamers. He doesn’t have any vision problems except general long sightedness that he has had from a teen.

Despe in reply toLAJ12345

It was addressed to Rescuema, but not a problem! NA 300mg is not a lot. He takes the sublingual one and I have noticed that he gets more energy. He was on NR but we switched to NA some time ago.

Hubby had carotid artery stenosis (99.9%) and a tiny piece of plaque got lose and launched in his right eye. Because of his vision problem then, we made the appointment with an excellent ophthalmologist/DO. He diagnosed the problem and he made arrangements immediately for a stent placement procedure. We were lucky. However the tiny piece of plaque is still there, nothing can be done about it. It's basically the cause of his blurred vision and squinting.

He does take nicotinamide . Maybe this is the cause. I wondered about the b1 hcl as well but so many use that I thought someone would have complained of it already. I took him off all supplements for a few days except his meds just in case the problems were due to any interactions and as usual he felt worse still so think at least some are helping. Hard to pin down any effect to just one.

Interestingly he has been taking double strength nicotinamide for about a year and recently it ran out and I couldn’t get it so the last week he has been on the normal strength one which is 300mg per day instead of 600mg.

The process of elimination can be tricky unless you can attribute a newer development to a recent change. Also, try upping Omega 3 which could help with dry eyes.

LAJ12345 in reply torescuema

Ok thanks. He takes 2 fish oil, 1 krill and 2 hemp oils a day to try and round out the different types. How much is enough? I was worried to over do it as I have seen cases where it can increase anxiety if over done. What a fine line we walk!

rescuema in reply toLAJ12345

Sounds like he's supplementing enough omega3. See the below for other ideas, but definitely have him try eye drops for possible relief.

Hardys has most things but not Lutein and Zeaxanthin. But he feels like it is a chemical coming out of him from the drugs rather than eye disease. And this is new in the last 2 weeks since the drug change . Everything else he has been taking for ages and doing well. But who knows.

rescuema in reply toLAJ12345

It's possible something else is going on, so do go check with an ophthalmologist to rule out any issues including corneal erosion that could certainly be perceived as a stinging chemical burn.

I've had stinging eyes on and off. Sometimes sweat will cause that. It is extremely uncomfortable.

What supplements and drugs are you on if you can be bothered listing them all? I’m interested to see if they are the same ones.

His bloods have been fine since he started the Hardys and other supplements and diet changes but doctor hasn’t checked for a while as last few times I insisted and they were normal. He has done the toxaprevent for heavy metals, had hair analysis , all fine. Berberine and allimed for infections. Rosacea and acne and PD odour have not come back so body wise seems healthy. I haven’t had test for inflammation lately since deterioration but might insist on one he is very difficult to get to agree to anything unfortunately as every outing is an ordeal. Not sure what some of your list are. I will look up.

I’ve seen 2 ophthalmic eye specialists in the last 6 months. Both said dry eye syndrome, I ve also had laser eye surgery in the past. Both specialists recommended eye drops plus an eye mask, which I said I was using and Omega 3 which we take. 3 months ago I started both my husband(who has PD) and I on Retinex from Healthspan which contains Zeaxanthin , Leutin and B2. After 3 months I cannot believe the difference after suffering with this for a long time. I still use the heated eye mask but not everyday and the difference is like a miracle!

My husband complained of feeling something gritty was in his eyes. Saw an ophthalmologist and she said Dry Eye is common in PD due to the lack of blinking. Drops help.

I definitely have had dry eyes / stinging burning eyes for a few years; Fish oil helps, but daily eye drops are essential. Try an 'all in one' eye drop...

Here's a video about fixing dry eyes with just diet. Seems to help me. I always look for simple solutions first:

Thanks! Our diet is pretty much as specified but the drink more water might help. He doesn’t really like water much and is having trouble having to pee all the time so maybe he is drinking less than usual.

You could also add some high-quality electrolytes to the water. I'm going to start doing that. You can buy flavored or unflavored. I'd suggest that you don't buy anything with sugar in it, but honestly, I haven't tried any yet, so I can't recommend any product. One more thought: I have a good filter on my drinking water (built into my fridge. As the saying goes: "Either buy a filter or you're the filter."

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply toJAS9

We got a reverse osmosis filter a couple of years ago and it is great so good on that front! Yes maybe he needs more electrolytes. I will check how much is in Hardy's. Thanks

Ah well, now you know someone has it too! Do you think it’s the drugs doing it or just not blinking enough?

See the video posted above by JAS9 . It reckons diet and more water helps . Have you tried drinking lots of water and if so did it help?

I found as I mentioned above a small eye mask which you heat in the microwave for 30 secs was the first thing I tried and found it very successful in helping with the pain and discomfort. The ophthalmologist informed me that with dry eyes you don’t produce enough of the type of tears that keep your eyes moist, they often block up along the eyelid and often this comes with age. The eye mask - drug free- allows the tears that are blocked up to release. I bought mine from Amazon and am on my second one. I m not so keen on eye drops, they can help but I find they blurr my vision. Drinking water, much more than I do was recommended as well. Thanks! I will see if he is amenable to the idea.

Ah, not in stock. But I will see if I can find something similar here.

I have no idea whether this is PD related or not. I developed burning eyes a while back and my ophthalmologist diagnosed me as having nocturnal lagophthalmos, which means my eyelids don't close all the way at night. They don't even close all the way during the day when she asks me to close them. I use Xiidra eye drops once a day and have taken to wearing swim goggles when I sleep. Sure it looks strange, but it helps a lot. I bought them with corrective lenses for about the same price as normal, so I can see better than without them.
