“Young onset is a different disease” - upcoming documentary about YOPD called “ The Only Day We Have”
"The subset of YOPD is growing" shoots a hole in the theory that PD is a disease of old age. It's an environmental illness that knows no boundaries.
YOPD presents unique challenges when ppl are raising children and need to keep their job. Retirement age people don't have to navigate these things. Do you have a support group in your area? Hugs 🌺❤️🌺
Thanks for posting cc! Very interesting...
I was diagnosed when I was 51 (I'd had symptoms for a few years before that). My neurologist told me that it was "young-onset". At the time that didn't mean very much to me and I've never really been clear about what the differences might be. Fortunately, I was able to work for several years after that (though it wasn't always easy). I earned enough to qualify for a relatively high disability payment. Still, my wife had to go back to work. My son was 19 and not at all interested in college so that all helped us get by. When I "retired" at 56 (I'm now 64), my full-time job became searching for answers. I've cleaned up my diet, exercised as much as possible, and tried numerous other things that seemed to have the potential to make a difference on my PD. I'll be very curious to see what this video tells us. It could be very interesting and useful!
Thank you for sharing this. I would say that Dr Savica's interview is the single most important video that I have seen in the 8 years since my younger onset Parkinson's diagnosis . I wish I could have had this information years ago. He makes clear a lot of important points and dispels a lot of myths here.
Bass, I am elated that the video was beneficial for you! As a YOPD person myself, I’m frustrated by the general lack of understanding let alone compassion for those of us hit with this mid life. Dr. Savica uplifted me because he better understands YOPD and therefore distinguishes it from more typical PD. YOPD is not a “disease of aging” it’s a disease that strikes midlife while we have to maintain careers, plan for retirement, raise children, and care for elderly parents all while trying to research what the heck we can do to help ourselves since almost all PD knowledge is targeted towards those who are 60+.
Many people on here could be my parents. My research is not good enough by the feedback I have frequently received often by people old enough to be my parents but my goodness I am trying. Try having PD while working part time, homeschooling kids, and caring for elderly parents and then research PD on top of that.
Thank you for listening to my venting. By the end of the week I’m ready to collapse.
I cant tell you how much I gained from this video 👌🏻 Thank you soooo much for making the difference and educate the YOPD group here.
Rabilo, thank you!! Your kind response truly means a lot.
I agree with others. This video with Dr S gave me hope! Not something I normally feel. I like when he talked about tailoring the daily dose based on what you have going on. Very sensible
