The topics of pain and pleasure are addressed in neuroscientist Andrew Huberman's podcast #32 posted earlier this week.
In one section, he addresses fibromyalgia "and pain of any kind" and the things we can do -- and take -- to help relieve it. Including OTC options.
While his content is not PD-specific, some of us with PwP experience neuropathies and other peripheral nerve pain, and I found his science-based suggestions addressing these topics worth exploring. Maybe they'll work for PwP...
The podcast is two hours long(!) SO you'll want to jump to the segment I referenced. It's found mid-way, at 1:04:00, and goes for 8 to 10 minutes.
I suffer from both global neuropathy and Fibromyalgia. First trial with Gabapentin was up to a maximum of 2.7 gms/day. At this dosage my Neuro changed to Lyrica. Both diseases are now reasonably controlled. For acute pain, I take Percocet. In the addition to the Parkinsons I have severe arthritis. The neuropathy from Parkinsons can’t be cured but it can be managed.
I have learned a lot from Andrew Huberman and at the beginning of the video where he talks about how dopamine functions via anticipation explains to me why placebo effect is a common held factor in parkinsons. Also found useful his many talks about how to encourage brain plasticity and explains that plasticity itself is not the goal...but, very much a part of it. I'm so glad to see him show up on this forum and find much of his information very relevant! but then I tend towards taking an eclectic approach . I think there is a lot of information for PWP in many of his videos. Thankyou Madame - Mango! 👍
I'm with you, Moondaughter. The volume of practical content he presents is astounding, and yes, PWP can value from so much of it. His episodes on sleep and wakefulness have helped me. PS: For other readers, here's how to access his videos/podcasts:
