William (Bill) Curnow - Biomic Life

I stumbled across this while looking for examples of patients of Dr Borody (the godfather of FMT). Bill Curnow is a retired Australian Architect & Professor who has Parkinson's and had impressive improvements from antibiotics. He also later had FMT but said that did not make a difference.

Anyway, Bill has a web site where he shares his story and his theories on PD and it is fascinating. It is a single page and you just start at the top and scroll down to read everything. It is arty also: biomiclife.com/

This is an interesting part:

"Methods/Clinical Incident: In 2011 I was hospitalised for bowel obstruction and after antibiotic infusions I noted surprisingly that my PD symptoms virtually disappeared. My notes/drawings before and after treatment graphically illustrated the difference. Silburn (my Neurologist) was surprised when I explained - “Cessation of PD symptoms was like turning off a switch”.

Outcome: After discharge PD absence lasted only 2 weeks. If antibiotics suppressed gut bacteria I postulated their toxins caused PD in the brain and connecting nerves must also be implicated. Via literature I located Borody (Gastroenterologist) who administered IV metronidazole + ceftriaxone and PD again disappeared. Effect tapered somewhat after two weeks. This was followed by oral metronidazole and cefaclor which maintained improvement over months but at a reduced efficacy. In 2014 I noted improved motor function immediately after defecation, perhaps due to reduced gut bacterial load and toxins interacting indirectly with gut neuronal axis according to Aylward [CSIRO scientist]. Measured physical performance before and after treatment confirm empirical observations."

Okay, this part is my thoughts:

Okay, close your eyes when you read this, but have you ever had a headache and it go away when you defecate? Is this an example of the gut brain connection?

This got me thinking about antibiotic treatments for PD. Found this interesting article on CMT-3. Seems to work. Seems to have a good chance of causing Lupus :(

I was given anti biotics for something else and my symptoms improved for a while.

Antibiotics taken for other purposes have made no difference to my symptoms.

I don't remember. What it was. I think it was for a tooth infection. I can remember mentioning it to my Dr who basically ignored my comment.

Hi there. I don’t know. It would not have been penicillin as I react to that.
