Empathy

I remember many years ago when the company I worked for for 40 years brought in another company as a personal motivator/attitude changer. One of our managers was a bully , but through nepotism and old friends was untouchable so all the managers had to take many hours of training, on how to deal with situations concerning our staff.

Empathy was the key word. The company made it very clear that we were not to have sympathy for the employee but instead empathy. That way you did not have to actually do anything for the employee but the employee felt that you cared. They gave us flash cards that we could read before meeting with the aggrieved employee so we would have the words at our finger tips that would smooth over the situation with out giving them more pay or a leave of absence or changes to the work place or whatever they really needed. Professional women were starting to come into the company and the whisper was that they were the target, most effectively managed with nice words.

It became clear that the working definition of Empathy is :

Fake niceness,

An effort to mislead by soothing words

Political correctness

Dumming down of real feelings and opinions

A diluted averaging where everyone's opinion must be elevated and accepted as important even though that person knows nothing about the subject.

The result is nothing accomplished or worse .

It does not stop bullying, It hides it with very nice selected words.

What you are talking about is not empathy, but hostility disguised as beautiful words, a feeling that can happen to anyone from time to time. Empathy is something true and has to do with our ability to understand others emotionally. Like PWPS, I suffer a lot from a lack of empathy, but I don't complain: PD is a disease that is difficult to understand for those who don't have it.

Definition:

empathy

noun

the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

I believe that sharing the feelings of another is called sympathy.

I find that hard to believe, Gio. You would be one of the last people that I would suspect lacked empathy. 😊

Ty Jenny

Sometimes life puts us in difficult problems to solve. If I were in a room with an injured tiger, I would certainly be feigning empathy for her. So sometimes we have to have patience with others who do not deserve, but it is a strength and personal awareness, I admire people with this greatness to continue to love others despite all the negative ones. I try, but I'm not that good.

GymBag what you describe is fake empathy. Authentic empathy is a valuable human quality and should not be diminished. You know the difference because you wrote the post.

Well you know the saying: "Sincerity is everything. If you can fake that, you've got it made."

Not quite, Marion P. At the end of the day one still has to face oneself.
