Awoke with no symptoms!

A few days ago I woke up around 2 am symptom free, and remained so for one hour. I first noticed a peaceful mental clarity and immediately knew what was happening as this phenomena had also occurred previously. After several minutes of drinking in and savoring what “normal” felt like I began to move my hands and arms and then my neck. I did notice less than full range of motion in my neck yet still movement was remarkably fluid and effortless.

At this point I was sitting up and still in bed. After maybe ten or fifteen minutes I stood up and started walking around my living room . I began to experience some telltale slowness emerging as more and more movements were added. Then I immediately stopped and sat down and spent the next several minutes enjoying what I knew would be a temporary relief. In the next half hour the mental clearness was slowly replaced by anxiety and dreams of what I could or would do “if.”

So I have decided that if this occurs again I will enjoy and maximize the experience by remaining still and focusing on my thought life.

I’m curious; has anyone else had a similar experience?

Around two in the morning where normally tremors awaken me, I had a most remarkable feeling of normalcy.

Thanks for replying Roy.

Exactly this. Usually when I first awaken I have about 30 minutes of complete normalcy. Then symptoms slowly arise.

Thanks it’s nice to know I’m not imagining something.

I have almost always gotten about 2 hours of being fairly asymptomatic after sleeping. I've been told it is called morning benefit. It is there even if I sleep poorly. My thoughts on it from a few years ago - haven't figured out how to keep it. pathwithpaws.com/blog/2017/...

I am a western trained veterinarian. Although I mostly do holistic medicine and acupuncture now. I enjoy trying to think out-of-the-box. Still don’t have this disease down though.

I always look for the silver lining. I got that from my mom...and when I see people bitter from misfortune I can understand.

Wonderful, that was magnificent!! Thanks for sharing. I’ve had a similar experience a few times before and have thought wow this thing (Parkinson’s) is going away. The doctor said our brain is still producing dopamine and this is why this happens mainly at night or in the morning.

Strange, my husband's bradykinesia and lack of strength are WORSE after sleeping, even if it is just a nap. Wonder why?

Somic67 profile image

me too. when i wake up it is often in the worst off condition, if i'm normal it is because of long or late effect of meds

Yes, Enjoy your precious times, when you feel relatively normal, without aggravating symptoms. As time goes on, I have fewer precious times, of near normalcy!

This experience is something my wife has every day she wakes up much better than she was before going to bed. The amazing thing one day she ran across the room as if she was in perfect health only to return to the Parkinson nightmare the next day.

I have come to the conclusion that along with all the physical problems mental issues also occur and cause the physical problems we can all see. The brain is very complex and the medical understanding is limited.

Think of this a small ant is smart enough to run away it it feels threaten and image how small the size of the ant brain. The human brain is very large not all is used and look what can be done. I feel science should invest in research and develop a deeper understanding of how the brain can reteach a person information that was lost.

I agree. The are drilling holes in our skulls and poking electrical leads in without knowing why how or what is going on. Sounds medieval...but if it works then who would say no?

While you sleep you produce endogenous dopamine, naturally produced by neurons.

This is why being able to sleep well and efficiently is important.

Important for everyone but especially for us.

The more time you can sleep the better the quality of sleep and the better you wake up in the morning :)

Somic67 profile image
Somic67 in reply toLuckyLuke

it is years that i sleep only under full effective l/c meds. if off no way.

i'm not so sure that my neurons are anymore capable to produce any dopamine. Being flooded several times per day by a quantity of levodopa hundreds f time the quantity needed to work normally,

i've read that they stop the production and it takes days or weeks for them to return to their "weak" production rate.

When I've asked my Neuro why I felt better in the morning that in the evening (apart from the natural tiredness at the end of the day) I was told it's because some amount of organic dopamine is produced and "set aside". I know many PwP are very stiff when wake up.

I think it depends from people to people and how many years you have PD, therapy etc...

Gobbs, of course we should hopefully all experience this if we have a good night sleep. MDS doctors call it the "sleep benefit" Should last about a few hours if you slept 8 hours or more the previous night.

Thanks for sharing, I learned something today which I will try to remember; “sleep benefit.”

I once laid down with the shakes and in a few minutes they turned off like I hit a switch! What a feeling!!

I laid still and savored the feeling for about 20 minutes until they slowly returned.

I think it has to do with how much inflammation and salt is in the body.

the flu shot takes away my symptoms for up to couple days, every year, for at least 15 yrs. i think pd is immunodeficient type of disease and the vaccine activates the immune response...thats just my theory...cheers.

The first two years I had Parkinson’s, every time I got sick my symptoms would go away almost completely until I was better. Wish so much I could’ve captured that.

yes, on a lovely July evening last summer sitting outside with friends. I got up to go across the street to my house for a sweater. I walked straight and tall smoothly with no hesitation and forgot for a few brief moments that wasn't "normal". it was glorious ! maybe it was the beer!
