Interesting study - initial results showed high intensity exercise weakened motor connections. Lots of caveats since it was short and not performed with PD folks.Good performance trainng only utilizes high intensity 20% of the training eg 1 out of 5 days

There is something to that . Experienced coaches have known for a very long time that you can spoil the complete program . The athlete will be useless at the meet , match, game, lethargic and he will not know why.

Thx for this interesting information! But: there were only males? As far as I know there‘s allways a difference in reaction, right?

Given my reading of this study, I seriously doubt that very many elderly PD patients could achieve this study's level of "high intensity" exercise or anywhere near it, i.e. 20% > than one's lactate threshold.

IOW, if we assume 75%-80% of VO2max as your LT and 20% above that per the study, the intensity they examined is rather extreme to say the least, especially in conjunction with the duration.

Therefore, I have some doubts about this study and its implications.

Sharon.

My husband has PD and is 77. Right now he's taking part in an exercise study in which half the group uses a Peleton bike which is connected to the main computer. But he was randomly chosen for the control group which does not get a Peleton but can do whatever he wants. He has already gone thru the base testing 3 days, driving an Hour each way, and now he's taking a boxing exercise class locally. He's sore but seems ok so far. Don't know when we'll see the results of the whole thing.

Difficult exercise stimulates Growth Hormone release. That's been proven in studies using a stat bike. Also studies using a sauna. Each makes the heart work harder. During the rest phase the body recoups and gets stronger and hopefully healthier.
