The issue has never been with babies and children, who are known to be able to grow brain cells. They can remove half the brain in a very young child (they have to in some very rare seizure disorders for example) and that child will regain a lot of his or her function. But if the child is over like five/six years old it is pretty much too late.

So, the prevailing thought has always been that adult neurons were pretty much unable to grow at all. But, read this!
