New research is raising important questions as to whether certain widely-prescribed drugs — antidepressants, bipolar medications, and Parkinson’s drugs — may be linked to dementia.

This sort of nonsense is really tiring and aggravating. The link is to a news report with a flat out wrong headline, and the text of the study shares the blame. But do not expect to find the link to the actual study in the news report. Here is that link: bmj.com/content/361/bmj.k13...

The title of the study is: "Anticholinergic drugs and risk of dementia: case-control study"

Here is the link to the list of anticholinergic drugs: uea.ac.uk/documents/3306616...

There are no actual Parkinson's drugs on this list. But here are some drugs that are on the list of the worst offenders (ACB score 3). This includes Over-the-counter drugs such as Benadryl:

Amitriptyline

Elavil™

Dimetapp™

Chlorpheniramine

Chlor-Trimeton™

Chlorpromazine

Thorazine™

Clemastine

Tavist™

Clomipramine

Bentyl™

Dimenhydrinate

Dramamine™, others

Diphenhydramine

Benadryl™, others

Unisom™, others

Meclizine

Antivert™

Methocarbamol

Robaxin™

Paroxetine

Paxil™

Pro-Banthine™

Propiverine

Detrunorm™

Quetiapine

Seroquel™

Scopolamine

Transderm Scop™

Mellaril™

Stelazine™

thanks for rightly pointing out. I had just a glimpse of it and found it worth sharing. My mistake, I didn't go into the details

I am now thinking that since this was a widely disseminated news report it was good you brought it to attention to be scrutinized. Also I cannot blame the media because they are merely repeating the erroneous call out of Parkinson's medications in the study.

It turns out there are a few anticholinergic muscle relaxers that are regarded as anti-Parkinson's medication so now everything is getting painted with the same brush. Those meds are: Benztropine, Orphenadrine, and Trihexyphenidy. If anyone here is actually taking one of these please comment because it would be interesting to know about it.

Thank you, PB! That is the most comprehensive study and list of possible culprits I have seen so far. I will say I tend to take my chances. If something is very beneficial to me today I will use it in moderation, such as amantadine, and let tomorrow see to its self.

Which one? I have noticed that taking an anticholinergic does impair my walking ability.
