They are crippling! Magnesium supplements and drinking dill pickle juice or eating the pickles have been my main stay for muscle spasms.
I’ve noticed rich food exacerbates the condition. Suffer me a teaching moment: As the human skeleton is the base buffer system for the body, and, as I recall from my medsurg textbooks, it uses phosphorus to buffer the uric acid that rich food produces. Now, subsequently this allows serum calcium into the blood stream as it takes phosphorus from the bones and teeth which chemically made of a composite of both elements.
Very Important note; the body uses calcium to make muscle contract hence the ‘charley horse’ condition. (The release of muscle is dependent upon other elements in the blood stream, potassium and chlorine ions.)
When I feel that restless leg thing begin I take a magnesium supplement and drink/ munch a couple pickles to keep cramps away. Otherwise If I let things slide I end up going through more pickles in my desperation and pain waiting for things to take effect and the spasms to remit.
