My Neurologist suggested that I try it,but I didn't like the thought of giving myself all those injections every day. It also can cause severe nausea. There was an article I read that said an inhaler would be available soon. Are you taking it by shot or inhaler? Do you know what the long term side effects are?

Hi Rathcline

Here are ten reasons docs do not widely prescribe apomorphine

1. It is extremely expensive compared with tablets.

2. Apomorphine is a dopamine agonist and unlikely to be prescribed (or is prescribed with extreme caution) to patients who have developed ocd´s whilst on mirapexin or ropinerole.

3. It is invasive as it has to be given by injection under the skin. It cannot be given in an oral form

4. Apomorphine is given to patients who have initially had a good response to levodopa and dopamine agonists but then experience prolonged off periods many times throughout the day

5. Before being prescribed apomorphine you have to take an apomorphine challenge to make sure it works for you. This is usually supervised by a pd nurse and apomorphine is rarely used in areas where there is not a pd nurse.

6. Apomorphine is not generally prescribed for elderly people as they are more likely to experiende halucinations whildt taking the drug.

7. Patient choice. Many do not wish to try apomorphine due to an extreme fear of needles (these are in fact only tiny –like the ones diabetics use daily)

8. Like all drugs apomorphine does not work for everybody. It will only be prescribed if your medical team are happy that you or your partner are confident and able to give injections. It is an expensive drug and they do not generally expect a district nurse to have to come and give you injectons on a daily basis

9. Some pwp may have to give up taking appomorphine due to allergic reactions or skin problems at the needle site

10. Nausea Prolonged nausea is unusual as large doses of domperidone are taken for three or four days prior to and at the start of the apomorphine challenge . After a few weeks the body becomes accustomed to the apomorphine and the domperidone can be tailed off.

Wow! Now that's an informative answer. Do you know if the inhaler has been approved yet? Thanks!

Hi MaryAlice

Civitas announced promising results from their stage 1 trials in January 2012 but do not expect to be ready to file for approval until 2015,

If you google " civitas 301 trial results " there are a number of articles about the company, the inhaler and the trials

Did you see the BBC4 documentary last night about Barbara Thompson and her journey with PD? If you did you will have seen the apomorphine pump in action.
