My paternal grandfather and aunt were diagnosed of PD. My father was not and he lived 80 years. How could I inherit PD?I am 50 years old.

There is PD on both my mother's and father's side but it's all the way back to their grandparents and much older onset. I'm 47.

From your mother

Seriously , the last information I got from 23and me was that the possibility of genetic inheritance being a cause of PD was very very very small .

Siblings with PD are usually explained by the fact that they lived in a common environment. But I was wrong once before, maybe they have discovered new possible genes that are causes. Lets see what the others say.

My mother and her brother both have it, diagnosed in their late 60s. Mine started in my late 40s. My 23andme odds were high- it's been a long time, I think upwards of 40% probability- but I am Ashkenazi Jewish and the prevalence is very high. The research confirming heritability is very young and still developing. Even 8 years ago the common refrain was that PD was not hereditary.

Its a really interesting subject, I was diagnosed in 2011 at 41. My wife and I wanted kids so we asked to see a genetics specialist who looked into it and stated that because my wife didn't have PD we would be OK. Don't ask me why. In a nutshell its worth asking for a referral to the genetics specialist.

PD is a mixture of environmental and genetic factors. Environmental factors include introverted character, type 2 diabetes, taking statins, traumatic events leading to lack of sleep, pesticide exposure, exposure to heavy metals ( including mercury).

My neurologist told me they now think there are 14-17 genetic markers for Parkinson’s. 23 and Me told me I don’t have the two most common but they did not test for the others. But, I was raised on well water in a house in the valley of three hills which were populated with farms, so who knows what was in our water.
