Because I suffer from severe arthritis and Post polio syndrome, in addition to PD, walking is extremely difficult for me. I do range of motion exercises each day, but walking is very painful. In my case, water aerobics/therapy seems to work best.

Parkie, this is fascinating and so simple. Thanks for posting. What struck me was the emphasis on diversion to aid walking which is quite different from the focused attention we are often told to do.

I wonder if all kinds of "focusing on muscle activites elsewhere than the walking task at hand (specifically I'm thinking of "arm movement") doesn't really alter (normalize) walking.

I have found that using a "walking stick" (Nordic pole, whatever) with the arm on the opposite side of the body completely erases all difficulty I have with "heel dragging" and "limping" with my left leg. Even though I put NO PRESSURE on the walking stick and in no way use it for support.

Left leg goes out, simultaneously the pole in the right hand is extended. Walking becomes normal. I used a walking pole in India for weeks and never had a problem. Total bafflement as to why this works... but "hey, who's complaining !"

i dont think that was a very realistic example of a person who has trouble walking with PD.

Ihave a lot of freezing and have never been able to skip or side step though i try often.

Did you try John Pepper's fast walking?

I bought his book and Kindle and I read it. I'm still sort of okay so no I have not tried it Mary

I've started John's fast walk. Or my version of it. I'm uncertain if I'm walking properly. Maybe not as my leg knee is sore after I walk.

I wonder if anyone else is doing this?
