Are there different kinds of Parkinsons? A great video with Dr Michelle Hu from University of Oxford

Dr. Hu, a neurologist and co- investigator at Oxford's Parkinsons Center provides an excellent 26- minute overview in this video highlighting what Oxford is doing to identify 5 different 'types' of Parkinson's, using a more refined scoring system they have developed. Ultimately, more precisely defining a person's PD status would allow for more targeted treatment. It would also help more accurately test potential new PD medications in clinical trials instead of trying to test a medication for all types of PD (this approach seems exasperatingly diffused and prone to failure). In my humble opinion, subcategorizing PD could significantly speed trials. This work could be so important for finding better treatments for PD. Hikoi - thanks for sharing this video. I would love to hear what others think.

What a great video. Her last words are very true. Effort to find a cure for Parkinson's will have to be global not just localized by countries.

Just reviewed the video and had this great Idea. We lay 2 Parkies with sleep disorder side by side at night and let them go at it, you know, sort of a MMA for Parkinson's. The first one to wake up looses. I think I could take this guy.

In the immortal words of one Paul ' Muad'Dib' Atreides, "the sleeper has awakened".

Exactly as it happened for my husband. REM sleep disorder diagnosis then 2 yrs later the Parkinson's diagnosis. By the time the sleep test was scheduled, I had already diagnosed the REM disorder & found the linkage to Parkinson's online. I sat waiting for the neurologist to say something about Parkinson's - as I could see the symptoms - but it took another 2 years & the suggestion of his UROLOGIST to go in again ! But this is the US. You guys in the UK have such an advantage research-wise by having the NHS - so much easier to track symptoms, progression, side effects, etc. - and less under the thumb of big pharma.

I believe Michael J. Fox spoke about this yesterday on TV....the varied approach to the different kinds of PD is the latest research focus. Did anyone else see this?

Thank you for the link. I was astounded by the state of treatment in Dr. Hu's area compared t the simple monitoring I experience. Especially impressed with skin biopsied cells turned into diffuse pluripotent brain celllls that are monitored to examine treatment efficacy. Happy they have developed wearable monitors to record symptoms and generate a report remotely that a neuro can use to analyze the success of treatment decisions. Really would be wonderful to not have to drive to a clinic in order to see the neuro for 20 minutes so they can guess whether or not your treatment is as effective as it could be.

Agree, and really would be *so possible* not have to drive to a clinic in order to see the neuro for 20 minutes so they can guess whether or not your treatment is as effective as it could be.
