“Therapeutic levels of MCTs have been studied at 20 grams per day. According to Dr. Newport's calculations, just over two tablespoons of coconut oil (about 35 ml or seven level teaspoons) would supply you with the equivalent of 20 grams of MCT, which is indicated as either a preventative measure against degenerative neurological diseases, or as a treatment for an already established case.”

Hi,

Just wondering, how do you take it? Do you just spoon it into your mouth, or do you cook with it? Or use it instead of oil in salad dressings? Or spread it on toast like butter (if it's solid).

I would like to try it!

Coconut oil: 6 tbsps per day (or more; adjust to your experience) Recommended: 2 tbsps at each meal and 2 before bed.

Heat 1/3 coffee cup of coconut milk, the variety that contains 6g of sugar, place two tbsp. of coconut oil and after it melts in a moment, you have a tasty drink not unlike hot cocoa. For that matter, add a chunk of cocoa for flavor.

What is sauce for the goose isn't necessarily sauce for the gander, more is not necessarily better and it would be appreciated if RP can explain his recommended 'dosages' the reasons why taken before bed. RP's recommendations are lavish and coconut oil is not cheap and would be beyond the means of many people to take on the scale sug gested UNLESS , RP you have ready access to coconut oil that is absolute top quality and is at an affordable price. Or (with my tongue in my cheek!) you live under a coconut palm(not meant sarcastically but with humour). If one lives outside USA or Canada as I do ,shipping kills the coconut oil project stone dead. I continue with co thanks to the kindness of Canadian friends.

I do not recommend CO. Due to my experience, I saw no benefit.

Hmmm......there are many people looking for guidance and some of them pass by this site on their journey to their wellness. You say that Coconut oil may or may not have benefitted you personally but how do you define that since CO has been used very successfully and healthilly for millennia.

Furthermore , your dosage .advice seems rather odd and excessive, given the fact that you, personally, found it to be of no benefit and being far beyond the recommended dosage you quoted in the same breath. Furthermore you seemed to be unable to answer my question specific to taking CO before bed.

With respect

RoyProp, does heating it diminish properties? I fry with it. they say grease/oils become carcinogetic when it's heated/burned.

I googled it. coconut butter has a lowish "smoke point", and you might as well throw food cooked at this point.....because it has started to decompose and don't inhale smoke it is composed of free radicals.....

(google)

best oil for high heat cooking is grape seed oil. (too expensive for French fries)

all oils have various smoke point, (maybe type of pan you use can highten smoke point?

I think that means....as long as it doesn't smoke.....but you paid for cold pressed.....?!?

20grams of MCT, is more likely than the 60grams in the article.

if you google mct, they have an mct oil that consists of only the 2-3 preferred mct chains found in coconut oil. it also has to be uncontaminated by filtering process, which makes it pricy. as soon as price is linked to purity, I figure eventually someone will cut corners.

Do you use the actual liquid oil or the one that softens ?

Thanks

Coconut oil hardens when the temp is cool and liquifies when warm//so either or it does not matter and it is very easy going as it does not spoil.

I feel compelled, in defence of my integrity and honesty, to make a comment in reply to someone who, by my recommendation to inform themselves regarding the truth , treatment surrounding many health issues by visiting and actually studying with some modicom of intelligence the site of GreenMed Info .....WHICH does NOT sell anything NOR DO I !!! I just wonder if anyone who participates here, especially the complainer, has actually bothered or has had the courage to look outside the square and pay an investigative visit to GMI (' I' means information!) ? If you have, congratulations, your EYES will have been OPENED.

In case you are still wondering...I have no connection whatsoever with GMI apart from the fact (Glory Be) that I am an active reader

Oh! and by the way...you will find masses of of information there with references on COCONUT OIL!

Mine comes in a tub as a solid at room temp and I scoop it out. It becomes liquid when it is warmed. If left in the sun it would all melt down to liquid.

THE MORE FUEL FOR THE BRAIN THE BETTER! ADD ONE TABLESPOON ( BEFORE GRINDING) OF WALNUTS TO SOME 0.2%COTTAGE CHEESE, STIR IN E (FOR ENOUGH!) ORGANIC KEFIR. ADD SOME WALNUT OIL (IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SOME . STIR VIGOROUSLY UNTIL THOROUGHLY COMBINED, ADD A FEW BERRIES ( NOT STRAWBERRIES )and you have a super duper feast for you and your brain! Why do you think a walnut is shaped like a brain ? Isn't Our Maker a master craftsman?

The purpose is not to keep the brain oiled...it provides ketones as well as fat as a source of energy when one cannot use carbs for energy. The electrical system reacts to ketones and carbs, hence the use of the Keto diet got people who have seizures.

999---666 profile image
999---666 in reply toDonzim

if I get it, more specifically, it supplants glucose, which is transformed into a solid fat and stored in the liver for emergencies, with ketones. (the brain cannot be without nourishment, ever)

what's new for me is that ketones kick in when this reserve of glucose, in the form of fat is depleted, and keep the brain alive.

what I don't understand is what is mtc doing in liver? has to be processed into a liquid before it goes into bloodstream?

Hey unrefined coconut oil tastes good. I substituted it for the usual tbsp of Smart Balance I use to cook breakfast cereal this morning.

THAT'S NOT ENOUGH! BETTER TOTAKE TWO TABLESPOONS A DAY AND RAPIDLY BECOME AN ADDICT LIKE ME! YOU CAN NEVER TAKE TOO MUCH.

YOU WILL NEVER WANT TO USE BUTTER AND ALL THAT OTHER YUCKY STUFF AGAIN1

I started on coconut oil yesterday - a heaped teaspoon stirred into my tea. Quite remarkable and very noticeable effect. Mood improvements and moments of crystal clear thinking.
