By the time people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, there’s already substantial neuron damage. Thus, the researchers tested the effects of delaying gene or drug delivery until after nerve damage had occurred. They found that mutant Drp1 and mdivi-1 both improved dopamine release even after damage to the neuron pathway responsible for dopamine release. The findings suggest that the underlying cellular pathway that causes Parkinson’s disease might be restored even after neuron damage has progressed.

Hi Leilani. Don't get too excited. Even when the scientists have done trials of this drug on human beings it will still take ten years at least to get to the market.

At LEAST! Probably more than that! But it's interesting to see what areas of the brain and what neurotransmitters and processes scientists are investigating. We're still at such a primitive level of understanding of the brain.

Mitochondria is definitely an interestng field for PD research. Whether it be 10 years or 20 I'm sure when the next big breakthrough happens Mitochondria will be in there somewhere.
