Parkinsonism s a generic term for all Parkinson's disease like ailments. It is usually used when no definitive diagnosis is yet clear. Parkinson's disease that afflicts most is often called Idiopathic Parkinson's disease where Idiopathic means "of no known cause". This being the true for most cases and only a few may be diagnosed as inherited.

Diseases that come under the term Parkinsonism or

may be misdiagnosed as, in the early stages are :-

1. Idiopathic Parkinson's disease - most common

2, Vascular Parkinson's

3. Drug induced PD

4, Inherrited PD

5. Juvenile PD

6. Multiple Systems Atrophy MSA

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy PSP

Three different sub-types that I can't remember the names or descriptions of

7. PSP 1st

8. PSP 2nd

9. PSP 3rd

10. Cortico-Basal Degeneration CBD - related to PSP

11. Lewy body dementia

12. Alzheimer's

13. Multiple Sclerosis

14. Huntingdon's disese

15. Essential Tremor ET or BET

16. And there's probably more.

Terms for those ailments described as Parkinsonism may also be named ‘atypical parkinsonism’ or ‘Parkinson’s plus’.

Hello Pete!

I have not been in contact with you for some time!

How are you doing?

Hi maidar,

I'm doing averagely thanks. Try to keep myself busy. Some on the forum regularly suggest that we should keep active and particularly active in a strenuous way, I concur. The only snag is that even when busy not all of those things keeping you busy require strenuous effort.

On the other hand if I have a day when I am exercised well those muscles doing most of the effort are rather likely to be painful next day due to muscle stiffness and unfortunately it doesn't take much exercise for this to occur and those stiff muscles seem to remain painful for ages.

Anyway how come you've not been around for so long or maybe our online paths just haven't crossed?

If you prefer replying by PM is fine.

Here is a link to a Parkinson's UK information leaflet about the different forms of Parkinsonism. It is largely a description of the different Parkinsonism but I hope you find it useful.

The Dr at the Mohammed Ali Movement disorder clinic told us, "You do not have Parkinson's, you have PSP. It is not the same thing. PSP is caused by Tau proteins. While, PD is dopamine related. They are totally different mechanisms, but they affect the same regions of the brain. That is why they are grouped together."

I have been diagnosed with Parkinsonism! I don't have all of the symptoms of PD! But, I do have freezing, and my handwriting is now not legible!! Those are the main problems! I also have dystonia in my neck and toes!

My neurologist has me on Sinemet 25/100 4 times per day and Baclofen,10mg 4times per day too! I am not sure if the meds help!!

It sounds as though you have been given a diagnosis by a consultant which you don't entirely understand. What a pity you didn't get the chance to digest the information and ask questions until it was a bit clearer.

This link might help youth find answers to the areas that puzzle you, but it also perfectly valid for you to make an appointment with your GP or Primary Care Physician, who should have received a letter from the consultant, and ask for more explanation.

I don't know which country you live in but if it is the UK, I have some further suggestions for you if you want them.
