There is some evidence that one of the ingredients in cigarettes can help with Parkinson's progression but even more evidence saying how dangerous they are. Does anybody here use nicotine patches to try to circumvent the dangers but still get the nicotine into the system?

Ironically, I quit smoking March 8, 1999 because I wanted good health during my retirement. Just saying...............

I would consider wearing a nicotine patch if research indicates it would help stop the progression.

My husband smoked (for over 50 years) until he was diagnosed with PD at age 71 and hasn't picked up a cigarette since and hasn't seemed to have a desire to start again. I think the PD diagnosis frightened him enough to make him stop. He also suffers from PD related dementia so not even sure if he remembers smoking. Every individual responds differently to PD but I would definitely try and get off the cigarettes. See if your doctor can help you with it. Good luck!

This is a link to Nicotine in Parkinson's research. It is early days and smoking is not something I would advocate. It was started in mice so just a opener for human research but it has also been shown that certain vegetables and fruit high in nicotine are worth investigating also. It's always up to the individual how they respond to such results but I wouldn't advocate taking up smoking even if Parkinson's makes you feel like a ciggie.

well i'm still smoking. and getting preached too. i think the government has them all brainwashed.

i had two sister -in- laws and a sister. my sister was 80, my sister-in-law was my age, and the other one was younger. i'm 78. and i do smoke. and i enjoy it. and have no plans on quitting. they are all dead. and i'm not . so far. they thought i was having anginas. but i just had a heart catheter. and my heart is perfect. even the doctor couldn't believe it. a few years ago i did quit for 9 months, and my blood pressure and cholersterol were off the map. so i started to smoke again. and never quit again. i have emphazema , and bronchites. . so i figure that the writing is on the wall. and it's not going to change anything to quit. so i might just as well enjoy what i enjoy. at least i'm still alive.

and feeling pretty good. oh and there were no anginas. either.

Please,

Judam9, understand that i intend u no offense by the following commentary:

Dear readers, this person is a living proof that not all of us are the same. In fact this person is who I call an "uncle Eddy". My great uncle Eddy moved in with my family into my parents house when i was a boy...

He smoked a couple packs of cigarettes perday, drank alcohol like a fish (not just regular booze either, we're talking anything with alcohol, rot gut shine, mouth wash, you name it. One morning my dad found him in our garage, drinking wine mixed with rubbing alcohol. Several days later while he was in the hospital recovery room, he got booted out of the hospital for drinking brandy which a fellow abuser snuck into the hospital for him, and popping pills that he'd managed to steal from the hospital phamacy.

My dad kicked him out of the house as well. After going missing for about 6 months his brother-in-law found him sitting in the snow filled gutter, passed out with a 750 ml bottle of MD20/20 in a paper bag. His fingers covered with burns from the cigarette butts filched from ashtrays and sidewalks...

He was a handsome, dark haired/square jawed war hero who, dumpster dived for food and never was sick a day in his life until he died at the VA hospital at the ripe old age of 87. Bottom line, my dear uncle Eddy was what we call ANECTDOTAL EVIDENCE. Face it, what would happen to most of us if we even tried to smoke a few packs a day throughout over 70 years? What would you tell your child if they asked you if Eddy's lifestyle was a healthy one for them to choose to emulate?

Please don't be misled by anecdotal evidence. Whether about smoking or drinking or even magical snake oil cures for PD.

Jest sayin'

Love you all out there...

I smoke everything. Cigs, electronic cig which is nicotine, and of course my Dr. gave me a RX for medical marijuana. Best thing for pain. None of my Doctor's would even think of telling me I should quit.

I am not preaching to the smokers on this site. "You pays your money and you takes your choice." as my mum used to say. With luck you could all have those genes which it make you resistant to the effects of smoke.

As I write this, I am listening to the oxygen concentrator that is helping my husband of 55 years breathe.

He is 83, and has COPD. He smoked for thirty years and then quit, but the damage had already been

done to his lungs. I wish he had quit earlier. I have never smoked, but I worked across the aisle from a

chain smoker for ten years and, of course, I also got second-hand smoke from my husband's cigarettes.

well thank you all for your good advice. i just know what i see, and have lived. and i know i don't want to quit , because i know it's inevitable. death. i enjoy them, i don't believe in what the government has to say. i don't trust them. i don't drink, i eat good food, and i'm not out on the street. i just had a heart cath. and there are no blockages. no anginas. it's a very healthy heart for which i am very thankful for. i believe if you don't have the gene for it , it's not going to happen. until the good Lord calls.
