How can I keep my hand from curling back when I walk if I am not concentrating hard on holding it in the correct position?

What I do is one of two things

1. Get into the habit of singing a song inside you head when walking (I use the Grand Old Duke of York)

2. Get into the habit if constantly saying to yourself Left, Left, left (in my case) In a marching cadence

I use whichever one feels "right" for me at the time

You could also try two Nordic Walking Poles which will keep both your arms working - and has the added benefit of an upper body workout to your walk

Happy Walking

frog's suggestions are good. Also take an exercise class for Pwp's (persons with parkinson's) . we often work on such exercises. sometimes it helps to EXAGGERATE the motion you want to reinforce. and smile :)

Just to make sure I understand? Are your fingers curling back as in extending and flexing back? Or, are your hands curling into a claw or a? Ball

if like mine your hand turns into a ball, I have a wrist/hand strap for a physiotherapist and it works fine. BUt do get professional advice and monitoring/treatment.

The supplier is Physio-med, Glossop 01457 860444

Thank you everyone for your responses. Yea, it tends to curl up in ball shape. It helps to hold something in my hand like a cell phone. But on its own and if I'm not concentrating in twist back and balls up. I wonder (hope? wish?) if it is possible to re-train the brain. I guess if that is possible it would apply to all the motor symptoms.

My suggestion is that there are companies that make assistive Velcro braces for the hands that will keep them in a certain configuration during periods of rest, sleep, exercise, etc. And, AlanEG is right about getting professional advice. We're lucky here in Western NC as we have the J. Iverson Riddle group in our back door and could probably get a "glove-fit" design and have it made there by local craftsmen that have done this sort of thing for decades. The suggestions to exercise it are good too as the muscles will only grow weaker if you don't.
