Dentist replacing amalgam fillings w/composite, w/out permission?

I trusted my new dentist. Little by little he replaced all of my amalgam fillings- in rear molars, saying there was decay. I inadvertently asked my sis if her amalgams were replaced. She said her dentist at U of MI does not recommended removing amalgam fillings. My dentist removed all my amalgam fillings- weakening the teeth, & my molar tooth broke. He did not ask permission to remove & replace fillings. He Just did it & charged me a lot of $. Awful! Anyone else have amalgams removed unnecessarily? Need 2nd opinion on decay and fillings nowadays?

So sorry to hear that you went thru all that and then you had a molar break . My dentist suggested replacing amalgams years ago in molars since they are quite old but I said no. At one point it has been advised by dentistry to have them all replaced due to age of the filling but I am just going to leave them alone. At any rate one should be asked by the dentist before it is done. In some cases it may be necessary though

Thx for your reply. Yes, I resent having my fillings replaced without my permission & without the proper safety measures for mercury exposure protection. I don’t believe I had decay. Amalgams can last forever.

All that drilling to remove fillings, weakens the teeth and the mercury I swallowed! I later developed RA. Maybe because of this?

I have dental insurance, which I think dentists abuse & he has now opened up a modern second office!

I also have RA and 2 other autoimmune conditions. I was sick with some sort of infection with temp of 102 and 2 months after that I had symptoms of RA. Hard to know what causes it. I have had fillings replaced in molars b/c of cavity underneath but I asked last time to just have the molar pulled on 1 side. I have a lot of fillings in my teeth and I want them to stay put if not bothering me. but probably would just opt for pulling a tooth in that area now as I am 72. Best of luck to you

So sorry u have RA. I have no problem with repl’g an occasional filling due to decay. In my case, all of my amalgams are gone & repl’d with weaker composite. I can see the grey underneath from deep drilling of previous silver fillings, thus weakening tooth structure . Will change dentist & ask to see X-rays. l’m in the USA and dental & medical are private pay so dishonest dentists are chasing $. John Hopkins research now links possible RA triggers to dental issues.... Removing the amalgams exposed me to swallowing, inhaling mercury toxins. I appreciate your input.

Many years ago now the thought was that amalgams were causing ALS and a 27 yr old man with that diagnosis was talked into switching out all those fillings for alternative. It was a huge expense for the family. You do have to be careful with unscrupulous mds/ dentists. I think family tried to sue but lost. I and family members have been to untruthful dentists We love who we have now, trust him completely and takes us well over an hr to get to his office. We live in the US also and carry private dental and medical thru spouse work I take a biologic for RA but side effects scare me and once he retires I can't pay for it anyway. Hope you have a 'milder case'.
