don't worry about using your mouth for breathing. I swim so have to breathe in through my mouth and out through nose in the water but it's possible to use the mouth alone! If that is all that's stopping you, just mouth breathe. I'm assuming you've tried other nose-clearing remedies like olbas, tree oils or steam inhaling?

I 'gasp'/breathe in and out through my mouth, I can't do the counting thing that Laura suggests or the in through the nose thing. Maybe a better rhythm will come with time who knows (I have just started week 4)

Just find what works for you and is comfortable :)

In nearly two years of running now my nose has always been worse than useless! Breath through your mouth much more capcity for oxygen intake :-)

Or at least mine has.....

Yep, just get the air in any way that you can - most of us do!!

lol this made me laugh out loud, mental image of lots of runners trying to increase oxygen intake through every orifice available!!!!!! Ha ha

very true its was just too much for me to try and co-ordinate breathing and everything else so as long as keep breathing I am happy. ;-)

I can't do the "breathe in through your nose out through your mouth" thing either. Its all I can do to concentrate on keeping my legs moving. ;-D

What is supposed to be the advantage of nasal in-breathing anyway?

Couple of advantages that I am aware of . Firstly, the nose is meant to warm cold air entering our lungs and that can be important - Google it! . (That certainly has no relevance here to me in Australia) :) BUT -- for me at least, it helps me to SLOW DOWN my running - especially in the early stages of a run. One thing that I was guilty of ( and I am certain others are too) was running too fast in the beginning of either a training session or a Parkrun. Doing that was sure disaster for me for the rest of the run - Now I deliberately breathe both in and out of my nose for around the first kilometre - until I start to feel the need to use my mouth. I generally then progress to breathing in by nose and out by mouth - until further on I feel the need to use my mouth only - at which time I start a longish 4: 3 or 3:4 rhythm progressing further to 3: 2 or 2:3 rhythm and finally 2:2 or 2:1 for hills or running fast at the end of the session. For me, I am convinced that where the lungs go, the feet follow.

If you have to breath through your mouth then see how you go. Do you always suffer with your sinus'? Have you been to see about it? I have an allergy to Dairy which was causing mine. Now unless I break my diet I just have an average runny nose in the cold. I have used various sprays etc on prescription they helped but I found out I could rectify it and have done this for 6 months now.
