Started week two and my knees were swollen when I'd finished. Any advice?

How swollen? If a little, ice them , elevate them and have a day of rest before carrying on. If they look like footballs, go to the doctor.

Regnold says it all.

All I would add is assuming you are new to running you mustn't be surprised if bits of you hurt. Your body just isn't used to the strain it is suddenly being put under.

Before I started running I spent 4 weeks walking. I walked further and further each time, at varying speeds and hills. In general I seem to have got away without too much pain as my joints etc had started to get used to being used again. But saying that I suffered hugely Saturday night. The reason for that was because up to then I had run on soft ground and Saturday I ran on pavement for the first time!

So assuming you are not heading to your doctor and the knees are just a bit swollen and sore, it might well be worth reviewing 1) where you are running and 2) if your running shoes are giving you the proper support in the right places.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks both. I'm used to walking up to 9 miles but not run in over 30 years!!! Knees swollen around the top. Am a first aider so RICE advice followed, rested for a day. Did run on the pavement for the whole run, usually run on a gravelled footpath, so that might be it. My son's also recommended some special tape, which I'll get at the weekend (he's a gym freak!!!). Thanks for your advice, I really want to do this! Will see how I go this week and maybe get my shoes checked if things don't improve. :)
