Is it ok to run on an empty stomach? Generally... - Couch to 5K
Is it ok to run on an empty stomach? Generally go straight out from bed before the kids can block the door...
Just make sure you've had plenty of water so you don't get dehydrated. Lots of people on here run on empty, myself included. At least you'll never get a stitch! Good luck
True about the stitch , I run on empty & have never had stitch .
Generally it's not a problem, but you know your body so listen to it. A few times I've got a bit light-headed and I think that might be from not fuelling before running, but it works well for me most of the time. If you find you have a problem then try having half a banana before you leave.
I run on empty, just make sure you drink some water. I need to have had a good dinner the night before then I'm all good, but listen to your body, if you find you get light headed you may need something inside you. Experiment and see what works for you.
I always run on empty - never had stitch and never felt faint either.
I do too - I have a small glass of water as it's horrible running with a stomach full of water. I ran on Thursday after drinking a litre of flavoured water and I had to stop at 2.5k as I felt so ill!!
Breakfast taste much better after a run!
Small glass of water (250-300ml) and an energy bar and I'm out the door 15 mins later... Water is important but running on empty for the times we do isn't a problem as far as I can tell ... You'll know soon enough if you need more energy! People here swear by rice cakes and peanut butter... Hehe..
About 90% of my runs have been done first thing in the morning and after half a pint of water only. Never had a stitch and never felt sick or light headed.
The key is to eat a decent balanced dinner the night before.
One of the reasons I run very first thing in the morning is to get a run in before my body realises it's hungry!
I always run on empty - it's the only way I can motivate myself to get out of the door before something else distracts me. I guess if I start to feel faint or nauseous (which happens if I get hypoglycaemic) I will eat, but it certainly hasn't been a problem up until now.
Rice cakes and peanut butter??!!
Cup of tea, run, porridge. Has worked every time.
I'm different.
Porridge, banana, 90minutes wait, run.
I have a late breakfast and run at lunchtime, though.
Morning runs are always like this for me. A glass of water, and I am off. Not sure about the 'stitch thing'. I do get stitches occasionally, which a few good lungfuls of air fixes, but I have never noticed if these only occur on the afternoon runs.
Empty stomach runs are always follows by a bowl full of porridge, banana, and honey on top. I definitely need this when I get back.
I guess it works for some of us, not all. Try it and see how you go.
Ooof, you are all machines! I can't even think about running without food inside me. Makes me feel weak and sick and slow and shaky! Has anyone managed to train themselves to do it? It'd be great if I could run before work sometimes, but can't seem to eat then run straight away, so would be handy to be able to go out 'empty'.
I think there's a split of people here - some people (me included) have discovered they are "morning runners" who do well on empty and others are "later in the day/evening runners" who are fuelled up before they head out later in the day...
I just found running later in the day didn't work for me (felt sluggish, it was easier to delay, etc) and discovered that I loved early morning runs (and I was never a morning person).... Try setting the alarm 45 minutes earlier and giving it a go... go to bed early though!
I think running on empty is fine but make sure you've drink something but just listen to your body, If you feel 'off' in anyway before or during then change plans accordingly
I usually run on empty and before anyone gets up. I set the alarm for 6 up dressed and a glug of water or two them off I go. Never had a problem. I get home then wake up the kids for breaky. Works well for me as my hubby is home and I don't feel that I'm putting anyone out. If I run later I have to ask someone to watch the kids and if I waited till they were in bed I'd be too tried. Try it. If anyone had told me I'd be doing this I would have laughed in their face and told them they were crazy but it works for me. Good luck and give it a try
