Anyone been medically retired due to their condition?

Looking to see if anyone been medically retired due to illness or going through process

I'm seriously considering this at the moment but it seems to be a minefield and is quite scary. Also interested in hearing of anyone's experience of this.

Hi ironically you should post I have just been medically retired last Tuesday and I was given 7 weeks notice. I am absolutely devastating as I loved my job and didn't want to go but it was this or been sacked but my union rep and family agreed it was the best solution. I am lucky in that the pension scheme felt that I was entitled to tier 1 which is the highest level and that I was also eligible for an extra 12 year's that I would get if I had continued to retirement. Hope that this information is useful for you.

Hi I work for local council tier 3 is a no you are still fit for work tier 2 is currently you are eligible for ill health retirement but this could change in the future and to be reviewed in 3 years tier 1 is that you are unable to work and there is no prospect of gaining employment in the future, which is what I have. I have osteoarthritis in both knees due to a motorbike accident 35 years ago, and need 2 total knee replacements but last year I found out that I have lipoedema with secondary lymphoedema which means that the fat I carry on my legs is different and when I lose weight it won't affect the fat on my legs, which means that the surgeon won't do the knee replacement. Then a couple of months ago I broke my pelvis and back turning over in bed and I have found out that although I don't have osteoporosis I have a similar condition. This made me vulnerable at work as I worked with special needs teenagers. My college had put in place as many adjustments as possible but this last injury meant that it wasn't possible for me to continue doing my job and they couldn't put in any more adjustments

I worked for 45 years in the shipbuilding had to give it up 2 years ago after i had a operation on my lower back on a trapped nerve , which was left to long and did not work I am now in chronic pain all the time and now have arthritis in both knees i am 63 living on the state with a pitence I have worked since I left school plus thay tried get me to go find a job I walk with crutches

I was medically retired from the NHS about 7yrs ago, I am receiving a pension and I also get dla, you should apply for this if you haven't already.

Hi - I work for the NHS and am currently going through the process to see whether I am eligible for retirement on the grounds of ill health. I was 49 yesterday, so obviously it is a number of years earlier than it would otherwise be, but it is due to chronic back and neck pain - I had two discs removed from my neck last year and, although from a neurosurgical point of view it was successful, it has not improved the level of pain and lack of strength in my left arm, shoulder and neck. Would be very interested to know what stage you are at now yelskwah85.

Very slow process. It's been two months now and still nothing. My GP and consultant were meant to be written too. I have no idea of the status but can honestly say it's stressful not knowing what's going on

I've since got another diagnosis but they don't seem too interested in any new info which baffles me

Hi all

I had my medical assessment for the ill health retirement this week. Doctor came to my house and waste of time. He basically just read out my medical history and I had to agree it and that was it! I didn't get asked anything about my job or any job. I couldn't give examples of how my life now is. So the decision now lies with his senior. My life is in their hands... the decision could effect everything. I'll let you all know how it goes

Yes. Both myself, due to multiple compression fractures and severe stenosis, and my husband after a degloving accident at work that cost him his lower right leg. What a pair!
