Back consultant

I had a visit to the doctor yesterday. I mentions the back consultant word. My GP said it would take months to be on the waiting list and only then to see a triage. Even then only 3% get to see a consultant. Even if that happened you would then be expected to have an operation! I don't think I would dare mention that word again!

Not the news you wanted, im sure. I hope your gp is wrong and that you actually see a consultant and get some help

Don't be put off by your Gp, you are entitled to see a specialist a lot of Gp's don't want to refer because it comes out of their budget.

Sue

Thanks for that Sue. I have many other problems. Osteoporosis and spondylosis. I,m 66 and basically my bones are worn out. I will press on but it does put a bit of a downer on things.

I've been through tier 1, 2 and 3 for physiotherapy and the 3rd tier referred me on to the pain clinic. I rang a few weeks ago to see how that referral was progressing - and apparently it's a 26-week waiting list, so in the meantime, I'm on my own - hence trying other alternatives such as chiropractor and this back-in-action massage bed....

maybe you need to ask yourself what you are hoping to gain from the consultant. i've spent 18 months going through consultant, physio, orthotics, OT, rheumatologist and on and on. i now know exactly what's going on in my spine with pretty pictures to prove it. but it doesn't mean anything can be DONE !!! it sounds like you aren't keen on surgery so what would you want from a consultant. sadly the ageing human body isn't easy to fix and we simply have to find ways to live around the damage time has inflicted.

Yes jeni9. I suppose that's what my GP was trying to tell me. Unfortunately my husband came in with me and I think he persisted too far. I suppose I know it myself really but there's always a small though. I still feel young at 66 but our bodies let us down. Thanks for being honest.

i know how you feel I am waiting for an appointment for pain management as I have been transferred from the royal ortho in brum to my local hospital as the consultant I was under has retired told not to expect an appointment till the new year

I know how frustrating it can be. Because I broke my hip 2years ago my right leg is now shorter and I walk lopsided. As a result I'm now waiting for a knee replacement on right leg and will have to have the left one done after! Just have to make the most of the good days.

Are you in the UK? If so, your gp is talking baloney. Ask for a as second opinion. You have to be seen within 15 weeks but, you need to think about who to see?!
