.YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO PAY THAT HOSPITAL BILL

U.S. law requires non-profit hospitals to offer “charity care” programs that reduce or eliminate bills for patients whose income is below a certain level. Learn more about charity care. Dollar For can help you find out if you qualify for charity care. Then we can help you apply, either on your own or with assistance from our experienced Patient Advocates. Learn more about Dollar For’s services.

TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, FILL OUT OUR SHORT FORM. YOU’LL NEED:

About 3 minutes

The name of the hospital, the amount billed, and the approximate date of your most recent bill

Your household's size and annual income

SEE IF YOU QUALIFY

Did you know that under federal law, nonprofit hospitals must offer free or discounted medical care to low- and middle-income patients, even families making as much as $70,000-$90,000 a year?

Many patients don’t realize they may qualify for hospital financial assistance programs, also known as charity care. These programs can reduce or even eliminate medical bills.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is proud to partner with Dollar For, a national nonprofit organization that helps patients apply for hospital debt forgiveness and eliminate medical bills. Their services are completely free!

This is a topic near and dear to my heart, as you may read from my recent post and replies.

My advice to Americans facing hospital bills is to pay as little as possible without triggering Debt Collection, and try to avoid draining your retirement account too soon. That way you may better qualify for LLS and other grants, like PAN Foundation. I didn't qualify for LLS Co-Pay Assistance Program for 2022, because I had worked half the year before retiring in 2021. and my wife also works. Then, in 2022, I took some money out of my retirement account to pay off initial bills, and that amount I took was counted as income. It put me over the limit for 2023 on my LLS Co-Pay Assistance Program application, which is different from this new web link.

But I know that LLS grants will go to more deserving people than I - and their grants will go quickly.

We're appealing our out of network insurance coverage through M.D.Anderson for the clinical trial I'm in. So, most of our bills are stuck in mid-air on Sword of Damocles Airlines, still unpaid by insurance.
