regarding enlarge spleen and TLC count in CBC report.
Hi Vivek and I'm sorry to hear you are so worried about your mother. Her TLC (total leukocyte count) is very high at 97,700 and should be in the 4,000 - 11,000 normal range. Whilst such a high count could indicate leukaemia especially in the presence of a swollen spleen, there could be other reasons for it.
It's important therefore to have the second blood test with more specific details, particular her differential leukocyte levels indicating levels of;
Neutrophils
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Eosinophils
Basophils
The results of this test will give greater information and a flow cytometry test will be needed to diagnose or exclude a blood cancer. Absolute numbers are more useful than percentages.
I'm not sure of the availability of good haematological services in your area or the cost implications but if diagnosed with CLL, she will need to be monitored by a haematologist. There's no saying she will require immediate treatment unless the enlarged spleen is causing her problems (particularly if it's causing her platelets and RBC/haemoglobin) to be badly affected.
Please let us know what happens as a result of this second test and best wishes to you and your mother. Don't be too alarmed, many members on here have WBC (white blood counts) in this high range and continue to do very well. The white blood count (TLC) doesn't give the whole picture. It needs to be broken down to the different blood levels to show more clearly what is happening.
