I read that 8 fl oz of beetroot juice a day can lower hbp by 7%. Has anybody tried it and does it work?
According to Wikipedia it can lower blood pressure. Haven't tried it myself.
Having got loads of the stuff in the garden I decided to make my own. It took ages to push the stuff through the juicing machine together with some carrots and a little celery but it tastes lovely. Even if it doesn't work in reducing my hbp by 7% I think it will be guaranteed to turn my pee pink !!
You need a more powerful machine that is specifically designed to handle hard vegs like carrots, beets, etc. There are quite a few around, check out the Breville range.
All dark red fruit and vegetables are very good for you irrespective of whether or not you have high BP or Cholesterol. That is why a glass of red wine is better for you than a glass of white!! Only in moderation of course! Seriously though, anything that is found to be beneficial to health that is a natural product the better. The less we stuff pills down us when there is an alternative within our reach which doesn't have side effects the fitter we will all be. Go well.

Fresh fruits, nuts and vegitables are good for you, not processed foods.
I had a few weeks back ingested beetroot juice, but was not diligent enough to measure my bp to check the response to the juice. I have however just read a BBC news report that it does reduce hbp, and I am set to try it again and take the pains to monitor its effect.
I will follow with a report on my findings. I encourGe you to try it also.
I don't know about 8foz a day but I make a fresh juice out of a selection vegs and fruits every morning and include beetroot whenever I can as it gives the juice a vibrant colour and distinctive taste. I use a Sage Blumenthal juicer (its a branded Breville) which has no trouble at all getting juice from 'hard' vegs like beetroot, parsnip, carrots, fresh ginger, celery, celeriac, radishes, etc. I try to get a mix of at least 60% veg 40% fruit like apples, kiwi, passion fruit, pears, melon, pineapple, citrus, grapes, etc. I nearly always use a banana and an apple as a base (I like adding a chillie but that doesn't suit the wife so it only happens when we have guests and I have to make two batches of juice).
The wife and I have been doing this every morning for a couple of months now and we both fell better for it and have both lost around 7lbs. We usually end up drinking 400-500 mls each as a replacement for breakfast and find we don't get hungry until well past our normal lunch time. I'm very active and find I can do very strenuous things - like 3 hours of hedge-laying or walking 7 miles without any trouble. The wife is 65 and I am 76 and in addition to the weight loss we both feel more energetic and have noticed an improvement in skin tone.
As for the effect on bp and cholesterol, we will have to wait for the next round of tests but I am pretty confident that there will be improvements. I am, by the way, on warfarin so I have to be careful with vegs with high levels of vitamin K so I don't use dark green vegs like spinach & kale in our juices but brussel sprouts work well..
By the way, when we first contemplated starting juicing I was very apprehensive about what a mixture of vegs & fruits would taste like - we've tried also soorts of mixture, often using over 10 different ingredients - and we haven't found any combinations to be unpleasant; as long as there is a banana and apple in the mix, the result is very palatable if not delicious/

Without doubt beetroot juice lowers blood pressure.. and the reason why is it is a precursor of nitric oxide.. nitric oxide helps thin the blood by dilating blood vessels and it also helps to elasticate the arteries.. (L-Arginine and Citruline malate are also very good sources of nitric oxide production..(amino acids).. used by many athletes..)
