whats the correct cholestral no
I don't know there is a correct number, it depends on individual circumstances. My total was 7.8 when I suffered a mild heart attack two years ago and following an angioplasty I have been working with my GP and got it down to 4.7 and in the words of my GP "the cardiologist would say let's get it down below 4" - hope that helps?
Sorry, there is no simple answer to this.
Every cell in our bodies needs cholesterol and our blood delivers the "good" cholesterol, HDL, around the body. The used "bad" cholesterol, LDL, is then transported back to be eliminated.
When a blood test is done, the result shows the total cholesterol level, which is best if below 4mmmol/L.
If it is higher than this then, whoever took your blood, should be able to tell you if this is mainly HDL or LDL.
Agree with Concerned. Cholesterol is a natural substance in the body, and its different components LDL, HDL and Lipids levels reflect the status of the body. The total level is a misleading figure as it should be broken down to its component parts and the figures looked at individually. Clumping them together is a simplification. All this should be discussed with your GP and Cardiologist. Armed with all the information you can make choices as to your medication (if any) diet and exercise regime to get things right for YOU.
Sadly, some underlying problems such as FH are not yet completely treatable and things like statins to deal with some of the symptoms soon to be as good as it gets.
What is FH?
