Sorry but the only way is to reduce your stress levels. Despite being on high dose statins and good diet no change to high cholestrol but get rid of stress/people causing stress and down to 4.6

There are several alternative complementary medicines that are working for folk. Each likes their own mixture. Self medication in this way takes MONTHS to show effect and DAYS to loose it all!!! Cost can run to £40 or more a month. You do not admit your true exercise level, this can help with stress as well. & WAS the guide line level before Statin companies got into the big push to aim at lower levels. I am not using them because of the side effects, and can keep to around 5-6 which has been with minimal exercise because of Statin muscular pains. Good luck in finding your own helping agents. Mine are mega doses of Plant Sterols and Omega 3 as main line agents, plus a few others to help with blood sugar and blood pressure control. All the best for a healthier 2013

Cut out all processed food, keep a balanced NOT fussy diet, (yes you can have butter on your bread), walk daily, for at least 30 minutes, 1 hour preferable, moderate alcohol consumption, no smoking and supplements if you need to if your diet is not as you would wish (Omega 3, \Mulitivitamin, Calcium with Vit D, Glucosamine if you have joint problems) these are what I take. I get most of them from Healthspan (they have a website so take a look if you wish) - probably cheaper than a prescription and no side effects.

Stress levels decrease with the increase in endorphins. These are increased as you exercise. Walking is just as good, espeically if you have a favourite place to walk or are listening to your favourite music on your iPod if you exercise in city surroundings. I find walking is great for letting off the steam of the day, thinking through problems and finding solutions and a quiet time just to myself away from the family and the demands they can make!

Good health to you, relax when you can, and have a very heathy 2013

Can try for vegetarian diet. Can have omega as your choice of supplement. Go for exercise at least 3 times/ week. Being high cholesterol's not 1 or 2 days things, it is an accumulation of years of uncontrolled dietary intake. If you want to lower it, might take some time. Don't give up.. ALL THE BEST !!!

My husband aged 61 sucessfully lowered his by cutting out pork and lamb ( more or less) and by having oat bran porridge every morning for breakfast. He always has skimmed milk, and few eggs. He has just gone for a second test after a few months to see if it has stayed down. We had a bacon joint and pigs in blankets, as well as puddings & cream, over the Christmas holiday....Will let you know the results.

First read any book by Dr J fuhrman. If you want a dramatic improvement in your life/health, it will take a dramatic change in the lifestyle that has brought you to this point. First decide to eat to achieve the highest nutrition per calorie of food you eat. This has to mean a great increase in greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds and a great decrease in high calorie but low nutrient foods like refined oils( yes, that definitely includes olive oil), all meat , eggs and dairy -- IDEALLY CUT THESE OUT TOTALLY FROM YOUR DIET. Don't worry about protein - adults need little protein and vegetable sources are more than adequate to supply your needs.

My cholesterol is currently a bit higher than yours and I'm not taking statins. There is NO proven relationship between LDL cholesterol and heart disease.

What you need to know is 2 ratios:

The first is the ratio of your HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol. Your doctor can give you a read out of your detailed cholesterol reading, and it should already have this ratio on it.

So my total cholesterol is 7.4, HDL 1.3, ratio is 5.7 - under 4 is ideal, but under 6 is ok.

secondly the ratio of HDL to triglycerides my HDL is 1.3 and triglycerides 1.1. so the ration is 1.3/1.1 - about 0.8. Anything under 2 is fine.

Conclusion -I'm not at high risk of heart disease.

The GP will not tell you any of this, but what those two ratios indicate is if your LDL particles are big or small. If we were in the USA, you could get your LDL-P number measured, this is your LDL particle number. If you have a lower amount of big particles you will have the same volume of LDL as if you had a lot of small particles - but is only the small particles that raise your risk.

So if your trigylcerides are low don't worry. If they are high, what you need to do is eat a low GI diet, avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates, and lose weight if you are overweight. Your GP can check your fasting blood sugar and should do this.

Google shows the following, please see your GP for blood (NHS or private) tests before going into any medication.

Recognizing and Treating Magnesium Deficiencies

In 1900, the average American diet provided about 450 mg of magnesium a day. By 2000, the average diet provided only 200-225 mg of magnesium daily, well below the US RDA (recommended dietary allowance) of 320 mg for adult women and 420 mg for adult men (see Table 2). Thus, while most Americans in 1900 obtained adequate magnesium from their diets, today as many as 80% do not get enough.28,29 Similar deficiencies exist in all Western countries. A survey conducted in France in the mid-1990s found that 72% of men and 77% of women obtained less than the RDA of magnesium from their diet.30

TABLE 2: US RDA FOR MAGNESIUM

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for magnesium is affected by age, gender, and other circumstances. Stress, for example, may increase the amount required. Some experts believe these allowances are too low. Amounts listed below are in mg per day.

Age Men Women Pregnant Lactating

14-18 410 360 400 360

19-30

400

310

350

31+ 420 320 360 320

Modern food production contributes to the problem by using inadequate amounts of magnesium in plant fertilizers, as well as by employing accelerated growing techniques and refining methods that reduce magnesium content. Today’s dietary habits also exacerbate the problem. Soft drinks and other popular beverages contain large amounts of phosphates that interfere with magnesium absorption. Diets containing large amounts of fat, salt, coffee, or alcohol also interfere with magnesium absorption or cause magnesium loss. Calcium supplementation can reduce the absorption and increase the kidney excretion of magnesium and other vital minerals.
