how much cholesterol is reduced with sport ?
I'm not really sure about the research I sent through earlier! I was a runner for 22 years (marathons, cross country etc) before having to give up due to a knee injury. After giving up running I moved to trail mountain biking and swimming and at one stage had a cholesterol check which turned in a 6.4 and my GP in Wrexham did nothing. Fast forward to January 2011 and I had a heart attack whilst mountain biking, cholestrol diagnosed at 7.8 which the consultant described as "industrially high"! It's all sorted now following an angioplasty(stents) and my level is down to 4.8, but we are trying to get it down to below 4. I am back cycling MBR and road together with gym, spinning classes and swimming so I suppose I believe in exercise and am looking to try a sprint(short) triathlon next year. Good luck.
at least for me, sport seems to make negligible difference. Still important to exercise for other reasons, I think.
Just to update this: while increasing exercise doesn't work for me, it seems exercising is better than not. A while ago, I had two blood tests in quick succession because of a medical mixup (some non-cholesterol tests were missed from the first one). The first was during a hard wintery spell where I was doing very little walking but not much else. The second was after the thaw when I exercised daily again - the second showed a 0.8mmol/L cholesterol reduction from the first, all LDL (so 20% reduction in it). I would not have guessed that.
