Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is where the walls of the heart become enlarged. It can be hereditary and so like me, if you had a parent who had it then you can ask to be tested every 5 years or so. However, in my experience this amounts generally to an ECG which history has now taught me rarely shows anything so you may wish to push for at least an echo stress test.

Look up Fabrice Muamba the footballer who collapsed of HOcM - lots on BHF site too.

Is this problem to do with food intake? OR given from grand parents to parents and on to the next generation? I need to understand this, this is because my wife's sister's son a doctor have had this problem and has suggested that every children, the next generation go for testing!!!

Six girls and four boys in my wife's family, a lot of testing to be done, in my case a boy and a girl. Any help would be appreciated.

The British Heart Foundation has an informative article on this, Bala. It appears to be genetic.
