My cholesterol test gives me a slightly raised level of 5.53. I’m confused as Diana is vegetarian and I’m hardly overweight at 6ft 3in with a size 34 waist. But we eat far too much cheese and lashings of butter. It’s no disaster – I’ve no family history of heart problems. I’m advised to cut down on dairy and sugar and come back in a month.

I don't quite understand this £650 test on the NHS, or have I misread this. You are not charged to go to your GP and get a starvation test done. If you have done that, and you are not specific, what did the GP say? You say you are 5.3, well that isn't the end of the world! Did you get a breakdown of the figures, LDL, HDL and Trigs? If you are confused read up on the web, there are loads of sites (and make sure they are UK ones as the US use different charts and figures which can be confusing) to become more informed. Your diet seems OK but you feel you are eating too much cheese and butter. They are natural foods and it is now becoming very clear that it is the carbohydrates, sugars and processed food that we consume today that appears to be the main concerns regarding poor health, eg. blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc., so if you are eating a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, (and living with a vegetarian no doubt you are!) , watch the amount of fruit juices you consume, they are FULL of fruit sugars, it is better to eat the fruit as the fibre balances the sugars, watch the amount of rice, pasta, and bread you eat as it is easy to eat too many carbs but still have your cheese and butter. Nice and natural, and ,if you wish, have local honey instead of sugar in tea, coffee and cooking as this is a natural product full of antiseptic, antibiotic, and antihistamine properties. Best of health to you.
