I have a 5.4 aneurysm and I have to have regular scans to monitor it. I am told at this stage it is not crucial, but I have heard otherwise. Can anyone clarify this for me please, also can I live my life normally.

Hi littleloobs,

The advice you've been given is actually correct for an aneurysm of 5.4cm across but any increase now would move it into the 'large' category, when surgery might be considered necessary. To help prevent increase in size, you should be absolutely sure to attend for all scans, and eat as healthily as you can, but other than that you can, according to NHS advice, 'carry on as normal', whatever THAT may really mean! I think I'd interpret it as to continue with your normal daily life but use a little bit of discretion. Take good care and try not to worry too much. The most important thing is to take the advice of your health professionals and to stay in touch with them. Best wishes.

Hi there. My Dad had one that slowly increased over time. He had a scan once a year and it went up to 6.1 cm before they did anything. Both his brothers had the same condition, one was an emergency case at 9 cm as they did not know he had it and the other went to 7cm and got helped then. As my Dad was the youngest he was lucky in so far that he was made aware of it and had regular scans.

Yours is getting quite big but like my Dad you can certainly live your life as normal but never forget to attend your yearly scans as Callendersgal said.
