Although ours is the most highly educated state in the country, alcohol and tobacco are stealing the lives of many unsuspecting citizens. Our state has the most per capita consumption of alcohol, both name brand as well as bootlegged. This applies to people of all religions. As you know, there is a large group of people who can be classified as "poor". Mostly it is this group of people, most of whom work as daily wage laborers, who becomes victims to alcohol and tobacco. A lot of these people make less than $10 a day, and end up spending half of it on liquor and or tobacco, and end up spending nights on streets and storefronts. They do not have enough left to feed their families and thus their family lives are terribly destroyed. Many die of different diseases of the liver, throat, stomach, pancreas, kidney, etc. Most die of cancer of one or another kind. It is a very tragic situation.
One of our priorities is to provide counseling to addicts at an individual or group level. Wherever possible, within our financial limitations, we provide them with restorative and even palliative care where required.
