I just read through a number of messages here. I am a new member of the group but not new to tinnitus. I have had it for a number of years and suffered silently on and off. I am glad to know I am not alone.
My T is a ringing sound most of the time and then hammering which I hear mostly upon entering larger buildings. I don't know why hammering is so noticeable in that situation.
I am wondering why none of the posts I've read mention electro magnetic fields and cell phones. Has anyone connected the dots that lead to use of phones and exposure as causative? I'm certain that putting the phone to my left ear creates the feeling of fullness I experience.
I always put my phone on speaker now. Not that it eliminates my issues because with all the towers around me I am constantly exposed. But, I do think that not putting my cell phone up to my ear does help to reduce fullness.

I think tinnitus was prevalent long before cellphones. My tinnitus started years before mobile phones took off. I also haven't been a frequent user of mobile phones for conversations. I'm not convinced there are any dots to join there. I guess it's possible that electromagnetic waves may have something to do with tinnitus but you would probably have to compare the eras before and after the use of electricity and radio became commonplace.
You might have something there-I am a very old lady and I can remember my grandmother and her friends all having what they called “noisy ears”which was presumably Tinnitus….and in those days the only telephones we had were those that you plugged into the wall!I only developed Tinnitus recently….after the Covid vaccinations…mine is mostly clicking noises & whooshing…it comes & goes so not too awful….but very annoying.
yes - it is proven that it is not good to put mobile to ear/ head - i always use speaker as well. Some people are more sensitive to EMF radiation ( babies, children, some women) and while we cannot totally avoid EMFs or Wifi , we have to be careful with wifi, electronics and chemical products in our life - either at home, or elsewhere - see my post today .
that’s an interesting post OKShakespeare. I’ve had T since my late teens, and sixty years on it’s still there. No such thing as cellphones in those days. I’ve no idea what caused it, and at the time I thought everyone had it and that it was just a part of growing up. But I always used loudspeaker mode, otherwise I can’t hear the conversation even with hearing aids.
Certainly there are more reasons than we know and sometimes there may be genetic factors that lead to tinnitus in a young person. We need to know more about the effects of EMF exposure so we can either incorporate knowledge about avoidance or dismiss its harms as merely theoretical.
I imagine (pure speculation) that tinnitus is more widespread in this technological age, especially from the 1960s/70s onwards - I'm sure there will be correlations between the incidence of tinnitus and Pop/Rock concerts, discos, clubs, Walkmans and other personal music players. Before that, I guess the industrial revolution played a role in increased tinnitus, with longs hours of work in noisy factories, not to forget wars. That isn't to say elecromagnetic factors can't play a role, but it's not so obvious. The simplest advice for people to reduce the likelihood of getting tinnitus is to avoid very noisy situations.

I realise that may seem flippant, but looking for technological factors which explain worsening tinnitus has always seemed like folly to me - when 5G is replaced by 1GPS mobile internet masts, I'm sure that they wil become linked with societal ills.
In answer to one of the original questions in the thread, the research into wireless masts and electromagnetic fields has been carried out a number of times, has found nothing at all worth being worried about and that should be reassuring, should it not?
There are all sorts of things that can cause T and spike or worsen it, so its often very difficult to know why or what and as you know, its not really known if EMF's can cause or have effect. A small ? number of people can be sensitive to Wifi radiation ( with or without T) and in Sweden, electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is officially fully recognized.
I had a DECT cordless phone on my desk years ago and started to get strange but mild sort of headache , which totally stopped when i removed the unit. Mobiles only radiate when in use, unlike DECT cordless phones, which radiate non stop . This was a long time before I had tinnitus and was not the cause.
We cannot possibly avoid WiFi radiation as its everywhere , and this technology is absolutely essential to modern life - but we can be careful with it around the home ie. placement of modems/ routers etc or buy special products to mitigate the possible effects - there's lots of info online about this.

I firmly believe there is a Connection.
Also Vaccines trigger tinnitus in certain people.

Everything I have read about using a cell phone next to your ear is to do with hearing loss itself, especially in the high frequencies. I don't spend that much time talking on the phone and don't think it has impacted me. I put all of my problems down to probable Meniere's disease.
I'm on the fence but I wouldn't rule it out. I think the increase in cases of tinnitus nowadays come down to amplification and medicines. It's possible there are other factors too. I have CFS/ME and have to limit screen use because it tires me out more than anything else. Minute for minute. Why this should be I don't know.
