Hi, ent doctor has put me on Betahistine tablets 16mg 3 times a day, been on them for two weeks now and no effect what’s so ever, if anything it’s made the tinnitus worse. I have Suffered for a year with bad tinnitus in left hear only and have no hearing loss at all when They did hearing test. Driving me nuts. Has Betahistine worked for anyone ?
betahistine Dihydrochloride : Hi, ent doctor... - Tinnitus UK
betahistine Dihydrochloride
I don’t know where you live, Juz, but here in the UK it is not recommended to prescribe betahistine for tinnitus. Though I have seen one or two people have said it helped. Please know that there’s no magic pill for tinnitus (and don’t believe any adverts you see unless they are recommended by a reputable organisation such as the NHS or appropriate charity.).
Please have a look at the website of the British Tinnitus Association which will give you some guidance. And then if you’ve questions do get back to us here on this forum.
Hi rosie, also live in uk, it was my ENT doctor that prescribed them, seems like they want to just get rid of you and will just chuck anything at it. Waiting for a appointment to come though for a MRI scan in the meantime. On Facebook lots of adverts for miracle cures, herb treatments etc, or coming though already. 🙄Thank you. Jules
Hi! I’ve been taking it for years! The effect may be felt after 3 months, at least.
Betahistine may be a treatment to both T and vertigo.
If you have a noise only in a ear, doctors should check for an acoustic neuroma in your ear( it is a benign tumour). I was tested when I had the same problem as you. The noise lasted for a Year and a half and disappreared after having taken Betahistine. Good health!
My ENT told me to stop Betahistine. It's used more for Menieres.
Yes it did for me but my specialist has changed me onto a different tablet whilst I wait for an MRI scan.
After suffering for the last few years with left sided hearing loss vertigo and balance issues I got a diagnosis of meniers disease a few days ago!The doctor prescribed Betahistine saying it would help with the Tinnitus also!
Reading up on it does suggest that it can help reduce Tinnitus over a period of time by encouraging blood flow to the ears apparently that helps reduce any build up of pressure!
Maybe worth a try!
I'm hoping it helps also!
I would give it a try and hopefully it might help!
I have had bilateral (both ears) Meniere's Disease for 40 years. I've been on betahistine for the past 7 years. Betahistine has stopped the vertigo but has done nothing for tinnitus. Most ENT doctors who sub-specialize in inner ear diseases (neurotologist) in the USA, start off Meniere's Disease patients with low dose betahistine....such as 4mg two times/day and then titrating up to 16mg three/four times/day over period of several months. Starting at 16mg from beginning can cause uncomfortable side effects in many patients. It's also very important that meniere's disease patients manage any allergies they have by taking only nasal spray antihistamine....never take oral antihistamine as it will neutralize the betahistine which is a histamine.
Allergies can play a large part in tinnitus flair ups. If you think you might have allergies please consider discussing that with ENT doctor.
