Whilst suffering an attack of gout, I was prescribed Colchicine which I spoke about in a separate post

Ive now suffered another attack and told the doctor I cant take the above drug as it spiked my tinnitus. So they have now prescribed Naproxen which to my mind is possibly just as bad. Anyone had experience of Naproxen, as its the same drug group as Colchicine

Hi Strav - I have developed gout in recent years, but my tinnitus dates back to my childhood. I've taken Colchicine and it doesn't affect the tinnitus. I was also prescribed Naproxen which I think is more of a painkiller, isn't it? It doesn't affect my tinnitus either. B y the way, I don't like to take Naproxen too much - I prefer simply to take paracetamol because it has less side effects

Hi, I had a similar problem - Colchicine and Naproxen both affected the tinnitus. A different approach is to take Allopurinol which stops the gout happening. I've been taking this for several years now - no gout, no effect on tinnitus. Might be worth discussing with your GP.

Ahh OK, that was going to be another question because after I have got rid of the gout they are suggesting Allopurinol, initial research shows one of the side effects could be tinnitus but of course I'm beginning to realise that so many drugs might cause it. Did the tinnitus from Naproxen / Colchicine recede afterwards? I'm still suffering quite some time afterwards

A couple of days after taking naproxen ( in October 2021) my tinnitus spiked from soft to concerning……I’ve taken them before a few years ago but didn’t have a problem then…..I also work in a noisy factory and my ears have withstood 17 years of it so I’m naturally blaming the naproxen as it just seemed so coincidental …..

Some 4 days later it has receded but keeps spiking. No explanation. I dared to take one Ibuprofen last night which may or may not be the reason for the spike today, it was quiet this morning when I got up. Now have a GP appointment this week to discus alternatives

Well I took a huge leap of faith and took Naproxen for two days as I had to, to treat the gout. I have had a spike but nothing too bad and after two or three days it is going between slightly loud to manageable.BUT ... now I have to take the ALLOPURINOL to stop gout happening again ... no one had experience of this? I found one medical report saying it could cause tinnitus, but it doesnt seem to be a part of the drug family that normally does?

Would appreciate any input, kits described as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor

I guess absolutely no one on here has had any experience of Allopurinol then!
