I have been taking Betahistine and I thought it was going great until yesterday. I had my first vertigo attack, my eye went funny and I was dizzy could walk and I was sick several times! And I wasn’t even at home! I thought betahistine prevented the vertigo to very light attacks? Any advise is welcome.

I’m on this medication due to suspect MD awaiting MRI results.

Betahistine is NOT now recommended as a first-line medication when a patient presents with tinnitus. If you’re in the UK you’ll be aware of NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and they issued fresh guidance to GP’s last year. However Covid started at the same time so some GP’s will have missed it.I would strongly suggest you return to your doctors and tell them of your reaction. Of course, it may not be linked to this medication - you can get vertigo for no reason at all.

Don’t suffer in silence with vertigo - if you can’t get to a GP ask your pharmacist.

To deal with your vertigo. Find website Brain and Spine Foundation and within that vestibular rehabilitation exercises. Just do the ones where you sit down and move head or eyes. Also from NHS website search ‘exercises for older people’ and do the exercises for balance. These will help train your brain to believe what your eyes and body and telling you and not your ears.

Good luck!

The Brandt-Daroff Exercises were recommended by my specialist and helped me get rid of my vertigo.
