In October of last year, I had my wisdom teeth extracted (at age 45). Was given gas, also prescribed a five day steroid pack following the procedure. The lower left tooth took quite a while to get out.
About four days after the extraction, my left ear starting ringing - a loud fluctuation whistling tone. A week later, my left ear became hyper sensitive to certain shrill high pitched sounds. Another or so later I became light headed and my eyes seemed to be harder to focus. And after all of this, another week or so later, I began experiencing ticks and tremors all over my body randomly. Fast forward to today (April 24, 2020), no relief on any of these symptoms.
I’ve seen dentists, eye doctors, ENTs, neurologists. Has blood work done, MRI spine and brain, vestibular testing. All normal. Last neuro called my situation “Functional Neurological Disorder.”
I believe something happened with the teeth extraction to kick this all off, but nobody has outright said that. The tinnitus was the first symptom and the hyperacusis next, then downhill from there.
Googling all my symptoms: TMJ, Acoustic Neuroma, Superior Canal Dis., Cerebral Fluid Build Up on Brain, Multiple Sclerosis (MRI was all clear)...Has anyone dealt with anything like this, following a tooth extraction? Any thoughts, ideas where to go from here are appreciated! Thanks!

My only useful thought is that when you have gas it does wipe out your Vitamin B12. Vit B12 is pretty important and perhaps it's involved in your later symptoms. That would be my first line of enquiry.
Thank you for the response! Yeah, I have read that B vitamin deficiencies cause almost MS-like symptoms. Reviewing my blood work, I guess my B-12 level was in range, but pretty close to the low end. Might be worth at least taking a B supplement... Thanks again!
That was my first thinking that the nitrous oxide wiped out your B-12 store. If so, you were probably very low in the first place. You should consider supplementing with B-12 daily for months. You really can't overdo it.
Thank you for posting this. I have been pondering the link between trauma and tinnitus and hyperacusis for a while. There is a lot of research out there on trauma these days and I wouldn’t be surprised if your symptoms were all kicked off by this physical assault on your body. Which of course in turn affects the emotional and psychological aspects of ourselves.
I would recommend cranial osteopathy or craniosacral therapy (if those therapists can get back to work in the future). Best of luck.
P.S. I definitely have emotional trauma that has then materialised in the more “physical” symptoms of tinnitus and hyperacusis.
Hi .. I have awful tinnitus and hypercausis.. have had tinnitus for four years and recently had morphine which I had a really bad reaction to and developed hypercausis after the reaction so I feel they are definitely linked . I have had 7 operations on my ear so have to put up with pain as well. It’s tough going, but you aren’t alone, keep positive ! Jenny
the same here!! My tinnitus started also a couple of days after they pulled out my wisdom teeth.
I am sure that there is a link. but the doctor's say that it's not possible that it comes from that surgery. they never had cases like me that afterwards complain about tinnitus.
so yeah... end of story I guess. really depressing. it has now been already 17 years ago... I have now hearing loss and hypercausis...
Too bad no doctor followed this lead about wisdom teeth...

Exactly same happened to me 4 years ago , dentist, audiologist and ent consultant stated neither tinnitus or hyprecausis are in anyway caused by tooth extraction but have lost count of the number of people who state problems started after teeth extraction. I wish someone somewhere would study/ investigate the link
I'm going through most of these symptoms but I'm trying to incorporate positive thinking and lifestyle changes. Your not going mad dont worry but ppl think I'm going mad lol check my shit out lol
I have tinnitus (reactive) hyperacusis which is reducing now once I stopped wearing ear plugs as I think they was making shit worse. At the height of it my own kids voices was painful I have ttts, eptopic phenomenon. Floaters (black & transparent, Strong afterimages. Visual aura.. eye strain. Shimmy vision, migraines, focusing issues so I struggle watch tv atm, dry eyes. Tingling in face & head, light sensitivity, muscle spasms, brain zaps. Muscle tention. also have nerve impingment in my feet lol which is when all this started. I put my body through maximum stress and anxiety through sheer pain from my feet. I was put on pregabalin then the rest just snowballed out of control. Chronic fight or flight. I was put in a safe house for my own protection because I was losing my mind plus all the symptoms are hard to believe unless your going through it. All in 5 months. So I'm trying to calm shit down now. Sensible eating a lot of exercise mindfulness staying positive. Doing it for my kids and wife even though she says its all anxiety which is hard to believe but I Need to take control. The more I worry the the symptoms worsen it just becomes a vicious cycle. I still cry most days and still find it hard to get out of bed but it's a must now to get my shit together. Just read that article it's very good

Wow. Yeah I'm experiencing horrible tinnitus+pressure in head+blurry vision+hyper sensitivity to sound+hand tremors+pins and needles in my body. Still no improvement on my end since Oct of last year. Currently working with a chriopractor who states I have nerves pinched in my neck, a dentist who is working on aligning my bite, and a new neurologist who's having me do a lumbar puncture next week (to 100% rule out MS).. Some things to look into: Meiners Disease, Susacs Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Fluid Leak, TMJ, Acoustic Neruoma, Superior Cranial Desconance (excuse my misspellings). Lots of different things here but share similar symptoms.
Hey MojoKing, this was word for word my experience with my wisdom teeth removal. I’ve been looking for people who have had a similar experience and they are not many. Hope you’re doing better now because this is something nobody should ever go through.
Most likely the nitrous oxide in the gas caused genetical damage (that may actually happen) causing your tinnitus and then a ripple effect happened. It is extremely common that one who has a genetic disorder develops another one.
