ascites

my partner was diagnosed with ARLD cirrhosis of the liver

Following a long stint in hospital he’s been home 7 weeks

He keeps getting ascites which is drained every 3-4 weeks, he’s following diet advice, has stopped drinking too.

He’s also been given albumin following the drainage

he was drained again on Thursday but the fluid is quickly building up.

Has anyone else experienced this and how were you treated

There are so many positive outcomes that I’ve read on this forum, it’s given me much hope

My partner has not researched or questioned on his condition at all, so far

Thanks for replying Gweans

It’s usually a week or two before he has fluid build up after drainage but it has happened this time just after a day , he’s had 5 drains and this hasn’t happened before, the hole is leaking and his stomach is quite swollen around that area too.

I just rang the relevant ward and they’ve advised to go to A&E to get it checked

So off we go!

Hello Powley, my husband has ascites and gains .5 kilos a day on average. He is having a drain every 14 days. He has an intolerance to water tablets. Specialist nurses advised us to phone them if he was getting close to the 10kg mark and they would do the drain earlier. We had one weekend where his drain site started leaking. Best advice I can give is to keep him lying on the opposite side and apply pressure. Hubby's wound kept opening for 6 days even after a&e visit Hep nurse eventually glued the wound.

Hubby is on REDUCe2 study for 12 weeks. This comes to an end in a couple of weeks and he is then having a longterm abdominal Rocket drain fitted. District Nurse will come to the house to drain the ascites and I will be trained on how to do this.

There are no treatment options for my hubby. However no alcohol, strict diet and exercise (if well enough) have improved his day to day life from where he was 6 months ago.

Best wishes to you both
