Hi all.
I just wanted to see if anybody has experienced the same as me. I am a 28 year old male. I used to drink very heavily for around 6-7 years. I drank vodka with lemonade and could get through a couple of litres a week following my dad's death (not an excuse but it is the reason I drank so much initially). I began to develop a social life that I now see as denial/escape over losing my dad at such a young age - I was out at least 3-4 nights a week and drank at home sometimes too. I have had a few sober months in the last year due to sober curiosity and wanting to lose some weight/improve my health. I quit drinking in May this year and remained abstinent for 3.5 months and then drank a bit for a week on an all inclusive holiday in August. I've had a few binge drinks since then but nothing like the regularity I used to have. I have always been an anxious person but particularly I suffer with health anxiety and am especially fixated on liver/heart problems. I have been having an aching pain under my right ribs since July. I had quit drinking for 2 months at this point and wasn't having the pain when I was still drinking a lot. The pain has continued and appears worse the day after drinking alcohol. I became so anxious that it could be cirrhosis I spoke to my GP who arranged a comprehensive 4 section lft blood test which have been all within normal range minus slight elevations in bilirubin/GGT which the Dr says is typical following recent binge drinking episodes. I had these repeated 6 weeks later and still the same, all normal minus slight bilirubin and ggt increase (bilirubin was 26 and ggt was around 60). I have paid for 2 private ultrasound scans which were both clear minus a tiny gallbladder polyp. I then had an NHS ultrasound scan which the gastroenterology consultant said the sonographer had reported a slightly coarse echotexture to my liver. I said that I had had 2 private scans in the 3 weeks prior and they didn't mention this and she said it can be the interpretation of the sonographer. She could tell I was extremely worried about cirrhosis so has requested a Fibroscan to look for scarring. She said in her letter to me that she has conducted a blood based assessment of the risk of fibrosis (FIB 4 calculation) which was 0.62 so minimal risk of fibrosis but I am still having this pain under my right ribs and she mentioned slight coarseness in her report, is this not usually indicative of fibrosis? During our meeting she seemed very calm about the findings and said 6 months of liver friendly lifestyle is likely to massively reverse/improve all of the problems/symptoms I am experiencing but then in her written report wrote that my scan was suggestive of parenchymal liver disease. I know that alcohol is to be avoided and my current diet is exemplary - I only eat fruits, vegetables, oats, chicken and fish - no salt, added sugars, convenience foods etc. I am just a bit confused... sorry for the long post I just wondered if any of you may be able to shed some light based on your own experiences. Thanks!
