cirrhosis and rheumatoid arthritis

My partner originally decompensated now compensated has suffered from bad aches and pains since diagnosis with ALD - always told it was a side effect of cirrhosis but as he started to become decompensated they started to entertain the idea it might be something else. Cut to almost 2 years later and he is just diagnosed with R. A. which is kind of a relief in a way as at least now he he can be treated and we know what it is.

Does anyone else deal with both conditions. I know there are certain drugs he cannot take due to his liver

Hi there, I had aches and such and thought I may have rheumatoid arthritis. Well, they went away so I guess I don’t. Also, my ALP nose dived to normal

Anyway, one thing I would recommend that I read about and still do as a preventive measure is try to incorporate prebiotic and probiotic food (not medicine).

Prebiotic I eat avocados and probiotic I drink kefir yogurt. There is the gut/liver axis that compounds liver problems when the gut microbial is messed up - which can be a result of alcohol.

Here’s an article. I only address this through food. It has helped tremendously for me.

I hope this helps.

Cheers!

Here’s another really good research article on probiotics and alcohol related liver disease.

It has shown to improve liver function.

Between my aches and high ALP I thought I might have had RA, but like I said they are both a non issue anymore.

I’m not positive that the pre and probiotics were directly related, but I really think they were - so much that I still am eating those foods.

Take care

Great! I hope it helps.

There’s a lot of information out there (studies) supporting this.

I had digestive issues along with my aches which are gone.

How did they diagnose RA

he has been in pain for 2 years and they kept saying it was due to his liver but as his bloods improved but he was still in pain they suspected it was something else. Diagnosis was after a consultant appointment and scans of his affected joints plus examination

Hi there. I don't have any experience of liver problems - I'm waiting for ultrasound to check gallbladder. But I do have Psoriatic Arthritis which is similar to RA and the drugs used are the same too.

The older drugs such as Methotrexate are tough on the liver but in the last decade or so a whole new generation of drugs have been developed including some very widely used ones such as Adalimumab. As I take a small amount of Methotrexate I have regular blood tests to check my liver but my understanding is that that's not necessary for those who take Adalimumab alone.

I'm not sure but I suspect that many of these new 'big beasts' are not as tough on the liver (or the body in general) as the old style drugs. I really hope your partner is able to get effective treatment.
