Decompensated liver cirrhosis,Osteoporosis,fractured vertebraep

I was a regular drinker and eventually my health deteriorated.i started with the usual odema in the feet and legs with severe itching.i also had an inflamed throat/ oesophagus.i initially took Spironolactone then was prescribed furosemide.I first told my GP in around 2014 that I was struggling to swallow but nothing was done about this until I finally saw a liver specialist nurse who took it very seriously.(I had lost around 2 stone in weight by then as I was living on soup.

I've since had my oesophagus widened on several occasions under G.A. and am presently able to eat.

Unfortunately and unbeknown to me I started to play golf,it was hard work as my feet were still painful and my energy levels were low but I knew exercise was good for me.However no health professionals had picked up that my extremely poor diet over several years had left me with very weak bones and whilst play golf I fractured 6 vertebrae. It was during covid and my GP( over the phone) diagnosed me with a muscle strain and referred me to a physiotherapist who in turn emailed me exercises.i couldnt do these as I couldn't move for several weeks.

Anyway, although this is a summary(I have other health problems as well linked to my liver disease I just thought id put this out there as a warning to all about the perils of liver disease and sometimes the misdiagnosis of not seeing a doctor face to face.

Not much helps although I take gabepentin which helps me sleep and if I really need to I take Codeine Phosphate and paracetamol but then that brings about constipation which then means I have to up the levels of lactulose and docusate otherwise as they say"im in reet bother"

Get on it straight away, you need to get it widened, although if you're still drinking it will just be sore again and prevent you from eating solids due to the inflammation.Trust me,they attempted to put a stent in my throat/oesophagus but its so strictured(is that the proper phrase.lol) that they couldn't do it.There were times when I was drinking that my throat closed up almost completely,I could breathe but I couldn't swallow and it could last for half an hour and its very very scary.

Mind over matter helped,I had to walk round talking to myself and keeping my wife away from me whilst I slowly relaxed enough to swallow again and its excruciatingly painful when its inflamed.

Did your cirrhosis cause the esophagus issues? If so how?

If you've got a consultant who you see regularly the speak with them.tell them everything and dont do the usual thing us blokes do when they ask you if your OK and say I'm fine...tell them everything

Sorry to hear that. I wouldnt have known myself if my friend didnt notice i was going yellow on my neck. I didnt feel unwell and hadnt drank for a few months bit did have a couple.of.weeks of drinking a couple of.beers everyday and it seemed to trigger off damage id already done when i was drinking harder stuff like wine and the occasional.spirits. i gave that all up totally abiut years ago and just drank beer with.lemonade when i went out. So i believe it had lay.dormant in my body cos i didnt feel unwell but had lost a lot of weight on my arms and legs which im gonna start working on excercise wise once im fully back to having full energy and my feet are still bruised but all other retention has go e. Sticki g to my protein carbfruit and veg diet and no saler and limited sugar. Work in progress. Im glad youre getting to the point where youre on the mend. Its amazing how the liver can effect virtually every part of your body. Keep well and much love x
